I do notice seasonal gas mileage fluctuations. I get the best mileage now - summer - and the worst during the winter. In areas of the country that see very cold weather in the winter (like here in the Northeast) there is a switch to "winter mix" gasoline for that season and a noticeable (as much as 10%) decrease in my mileage. 1 Quote

I've primarily heard it the other way around. There is a switch to "summer blend" starting in early May. An additive is added to it to prevent evaporation in the heat. Then starting in early October, its removed again...which is what you are referring to as "winter mix" that has no additives for evaporation. 1 Quote

Either way, it provides an explanation for the noticeable difference between summer and winter mileage in some parts of the country. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 15, 2022 Super User Posted July 15, 2022 You may be right @gimruis, again, I think it's by region as to what detergents they put in. My friend who deals in gas told me that they do add for the winter here in MA. Really doesn't matter, it's not pure gas we're getting as consumers out of the pump. BTW: I'm in "Like" purgatory. Don't be offended... Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 16, 2022 Super User Posted July 16, 2022 Well, i tried. Gas station is out of all grades of flex fuel ethanol. I'm still saving $1.00 a gallon driving 15 minutes to a different county. 5.49 for 87 octane in my county, 4.49 in the neighboring county, and E85 in the neighboring county is 3.49 1 Quote

You need to move. I paid $3.72 / gallon yesterday for regular 87 octane. I assume everyone is using the Gas Buddy app on your phone to find the cheapest gas. I highly recommend it. 1 Quote

I looked it over - to save $0.10 a gallon I'd have to trip 12 miles each way...but then I don't get my fuel rewards discount which as I stated above I usually get $0.40 a gallon off the first 20...so Gas Buddy doesn't help me Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 16, 2022 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 16, 2022 You guys got it easy. Today's prices in my neck of the woods, thanks to the nation's 3rd highest gas tax: $5.49 for Gas $6.59 for diesel You'd think we'd have pristine roads and the best traffic with that tax, but nope! We have the worst roads and the 3rd worst traffic. 1 1 1 Quote

I have yet to see any drop in gas or diesel prices. Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted July 18, 2022 Super User Posted July 18, 2022 Well glory be, got some diesel tonight and guess what, price dropped a whopping 20 cents per gal. Not complaining, but I'd really like to see it come down a tad more. 1 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted July 19, 2022 Super User Posted July 19, 2022 No matter what I use for gas, my truck basically gets 15.1 mpg with normal around town driving, and 17 if I do enough trips. When I had older cars, non ethanol was always the best gas to use, but with newer vehicles ethanol does better. We saw our gas prices drop 45 cents about a week ago, but they've been stagnant since. 1 Quote
Tatulatard Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 My 27 mpg subaru is down while I replace the old 5mt with one from a turbo car so I get to drive my truck as my daily. It gets 14.6 mpg highway. How do people daily drive trucks? I cringe every time I fill it up. Quote

Well I can’t put live raccoons and skunks in a Subaru so…….. that’s how my work truck gets 19.5 mpg 2 1 Quote

However, I work a hybrid field/office/remote schedule now so I don't necessarily have to go anywhere on a daily basis. I also chose the house I live in partially based on proximity to work. Its 13 miles one way which isn't too bad. My previous house was 7 miles one way. If I need to run errands around town, I use my wife's SUV which gets much better mileage. Parking a full size truck in lots at stores is not much fun. No doubt its painful to fill up a 32 gallon tank in my truck. Luckily, I don't have to do it every week. Some people do. Those people probably make a lot more money than I do and can afford it. In the winter, I only fill up about once every 45 days because I don't really go anywhere other than work, which isn't even every day either. Quote

In 2004, when gas was $1.85 a gallon, I ordered this from the factory... 2500HD 4x4 with the 8.1/496 Big Block, Allison transmission, LT with all the goodies, including rear sear DVD for the daughters. This truck got 10.5 MPG city, and a whopping 12.5 MPG highway. I record fuel/mpg/etc. with every fill up. I once calculated the total amount of $$ spent on gas for the year...yea, never did that again! : ) It was my daily driver until 2010 when I got an Accord to drive back and forth to work. It was a great truck, loved driving it! Sold in 2019 with 140k on the odometer. Got in to a Duramax...getting slightly better MPG city (~16), and still daily-drive the Accord...it rocks 30 MPG all day. 1 1 Quote
GReb Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 When my truck was newer and gas prices started with a 2, I only used Shell, Exxon, and Chevron. In the past year or so I have almost exclusively used Costco. My low fuel notification used to always appear at 42 miles to empty and now it’s consistently 39. Not very scientific but I’d feel pretty confident I’ve lost 1 or 2 mpg due to a combination of cheap gas and the age of my vehicle. 1 Quote

My wife has a Honda Fit, we take it to the ocean with a canoe on top. It still gets 30+ mpg with it up there. I shouldnt take it lightly, it’s got 266,000 miles and I ramped over a dead deer with it. Still runs like a top 2 Quote
