Pickup truck is the answer for you.

I've owned 3 fishing kayaks, a Colman crawdad, 14 ft Mad river canoe, Bass Raider and several recreational kayaks.

All easily slid on and off the pickup bed.

Wife had a Subaru with Yakima roof rack and we needed our Wheaties to load and strap boats.

Did you not have a boat loader for the rack?  Thats what I have and find it as easy to load my kayak onto my subaru as it is to put it into the bed of my truck.  I also have the benefit of not having to have a flag on the end and I can park easier when driving around with a kayak loaded.  I'll have a kayak loaded for weeks at a time on a daily driver in spring.

I recently made the switch from an Xterra to a Colorado extended cab.  The loss of interior storage space is definitely a bummer.  I kept rods bungied to the roof in the Xterra, and had built a drawer / sleeping platform.  Kept a ton of stuff in the drawers for camping, fishing, mtn biking.

Like most others, my rods go in the passenger footwell and diagonal across the cab.  No more leaving them in the vehicle, too visible.  Easier getting the kayak in the bed of the truck compared to the roof of the Xterra, but tailgate down means I can't put much else in the bed.  My fishing crate and cooler at least fit in front of the wheel wells, and the kayak is wide enough that it'll keep them from sliding out.  Just have to think more about how I pack things inside the cab, and remember that I don't have drawers with a stash of bug spray and sunscreen in case I forget or run out.  Eventually I'll build a storage platform for the cab.

Cab? Do you mean a cap for the bed?  Those were always aftermarket. ARE makes nice caps.

I'm partial to Leer myself - that's what I've had on my last 2 trucks.

absolutely.  i keep my tailgate down with kayak jabbing out, and lower the toppers swing down glass door.  fairly secure and my stuff stays dry.

if i did a road trip kayak excursion, i would put my kayak on the yakima rack on top of the topper shell and go down the road like that.  that way i can sleep in back if need be.  i have done it.  i cable lock the kayak down outside and put down an air mattress inside.  servicable sleep.

I haul my PA14 around in the bed of my F150 with the tailgate down. No issues yet.  It is heavy but once you get use to loading it, it's not so bad. My rods can fit in the cab up to 8 feet but it gets tricky above 7'4''.truck-1.thumb.jpg.2d16f9adde7eb34bc8c932656f924164.jpg

For lightweight yaks not much. Beyond that? Weight and convenience.

Trailer can be backed into the water and the yak floated without hitting the ground.

Pulling it out of the bed, need a tote or cushion system if you don't want the heavy yak scraping pavement.

"Everything in life is a tradeoff." (wise HS teacher said)

With a trailer you can also launch the yak fully loaded...all electronics and other gear ready to go. You'd get off the ramp a lot quicker.

Added Yakima roof trunk and put all of rods that I use less in it, Also put a three steps ladder at the back so I can get to it very easy. After installation when I drive, I haven't seen any resistance for air or any feelings that I have it on top. 6'6" by 36" by 18" is the messurments.

Nice. That would come in handy.

I pulled the trigger on a Yakima rod box, nice not having to worry about having the rods in the cab.  This is my road trip setup when I need the bed space.  I just throw the kayak in the bed for day trips.

That might be my next purchase, I can put them side by side. There is another company also making same thing , I just saw yakima have that and that is awesome to have everything same brand.

Did OP ever buy a kayak or a truck?  this thread ballooned.

i am now in the market.  i was about to buy a new Tacoma to replace my aging 2006 - Finally!  price was acceptable.  easy.

then i looked out the sparkling windshield, pointed at another truck and asked, "what is that?"

salesman exclaims, "why that is the new and lastest generation of Tundra!"

oh o.  it gets just a bit better MPG, way bigger for rods and dog.  just a nice rig.  price was less than acceptable.  i'm not ready mentally for a truck payment.  i dumped that load back in 2008, and vowed to never pay the vig for a vehicle ever again.  my wife's Tesla may have flushed the account beyond my new Tundra.

Steady as she blows helmsmen.

My last debt that we had to clear to become debt free was my 2020 Tacoma access cab. I have thought about this a lot and many of my friends and co-workers thought me crazy because I had 1.9% APR financing. But debt is debt and that was the last soldier standing we even had our mortgage paid off but I owed on my ride. $31K financed on a 60 month note, we paid this off in 26 months.

I love the truck but never ever again will I borrow for anything no matter how much I want want want. It is hard I know but no, never. I tell myself all the time in Sept 2020 I needed a new vehicle but I didn't need a brand new truck and a 60 month note to go along with it.

Yakima Rack and Roll is probably the best purpose built trailer for this.

https://yakima.com/products/rackandroll-78-trailer

$2,999 - yeah …. NO.

I have a ‘17 Tundra and keep a couple 2-piece rods in the under seat storage for quick stops.

My Lure 11.5 stays in the bed most of the time but rests on my ladder rack if I’m taking my Ranger too.

I strip the kayak and can lift it onto the rack myself NP.

Otherwise I store 1-piece rods in the bed that’s covered by a hard tonneau.

I totally jinxed myself talking about my truck.

a Drunk Driver just plowed into me this afternoon.  I didnt get the luxury of exchanging info with the guy like two responsible adults.  he was wrestled into an ambo..by 6 dudes.  cops and fire.  they strapped him to a gurney..and cuffed him.

I'm fine and truck is drivable.   at least to kayak fish.  I bet it is totaled being how old it is. :(  frame looks tweaked.   but I dont have the eyes of a good body shop.  those guys can find things...I can't see.  first initial phone calls to insurance companies seem to indicate he isn't covered.  it won't be as clean a transaction, I dont think.  I do have coverage.  but they have to exhaust all efforts to pass the buck to someone.

I am just gonna sit on my couch now.

Glad to hear you came out ok !!  It does suck to have to carry ins on people that dont have it !!

About your truck decision, many years back I decuded to buy a PU truck to haul my firewood for our woodstove...worked great for a while until I realized I had to unload it so I could drive to work the next day...in fact, no matter what was loaded in the back had to be unloaded before goung to work the next day!  After a while, I bought a trailer and soon realized I could unhook it and leave it while I went to work the next day...soon realized the trailer was much less work in the long run....insurance was cheaper on an SUV with a trailer than on a PU truck....never looked back and never owned another PU truck.  But, I do have some nice trailers !!

Bummer and I'm glad you're OK.

But the bold type is straight up BS by your insurance company.

YOU PAY THEM to take care of you when this happens.

Make them do it. Now.

They can chase any $$ they want to recover AFTER your needs are met.

Do Not accept anything else.

Then, I'd consider changing insurance companies.

Good Luck

Super wise words from @A-Jay here!  I could not agree more!

I am lucky to have an long-time college buddy as my insurance man. Known him for 30+ years, hunt and fish together, great friend...he's saved my tail many times with his industry insight.

Call your insurance company and get them on this now.

Dang, good to hear you're ok.  With the values of those older Tacomas, I'd be surprised if it was totaled.  And even if it is, I'd buy it back and fix it.
