They didn't name it Tatula. No free floating spool, so the double supported pinion is probably using the same scheme as the Tatula 300 with a bearing mounted on the spool. Cool.

HYPER DOUBLE SUPPORT- a two bearing support system for the reel's pinion gear means no flex and an ultra smooth retrieve/ gear rotation.

DOUBLE HYPER? Take my money!!! lol Aluminum sideplate too, interestingly no mention of the brake system.

Description on fishusa says Magforce Z brakes.  And "Magforce-Z high strength aluminum spool is ideal for lures about 1/6 oz. - 3/4 oz."

How much is this version?

Reason I haven't bought a Tat 80 is I don't understand why it is $40 more than any other Tat 100, 150, or 200.

I bought my Alphas SV with floating spool for cheaper than a Tat 80.

Costal 150 wasn't called a tatula either but it is a blue tatula.

But this is probably using a hybrid double pinion support. If so, like the Tat 300, this isn't your dad's Tatula.

Nice.  Didn't realize there is super free and a hyper double support.  Assumed this one would just be a blue tatula 80.

So this or the coastal 150 sv?

Depends on what you're looking for.

The 150 is a blue Tatula Elite with a deep SV spool and more controlled braking.

The 80 is a blue Tatula 80 with a little more line capacity, and a newer pinion support design.

Not much chance I'd buy the Coastal 80 over an Alphas SV TW.

Can you explain what pinion support is?

Please

On most Tatula models, the pinion gear is supported on the spool side by a bearing, but the other end is supported only by the spool shaft.

On higher end free float spool Daiwa reels, the pinion gear is supported on both ends by a bearing, creating a more rigid drivetrain.

(I believe) this reel has somewhat of mixture of the two designs, like the Tatula 300. It is a not a free float spool / fully supported pinion, but it does incorporate some type of bearing support into the handle side of the pinion. I have no hands on experience with this design, so I cannot comment much further. @PhishLI might be able to elaborate.

Coastal = Salt water friendly?

Well.

They stick a couple of CRBBS in it. Take that for what it's worth.

Like ammoguy said it depends on application. I picked up a coastal 150 last year but sold it off a few months back as I didn't like the braking, it had that choked off feel and I could never seem to get it dialed in for distance, perhaps that was my fault. A jdm zillion could be had for not much more, or an alphas 800 for less. I got the new zillion a few weeks back, it's not as compact in hand as the 150 but it's effortless casting, free floating spool is where it's at performace wise, that said this new coastal tw80 peaked my curiosity being that it's not an sv. It might make a good pitch/flip reel.

I have the jdm zillion. It’s great.
Was specifically looking for an inshore reel for a reds/trout setup (but something I could use for bass when not at the coast). I think I like this reel for that.

The Coastal SVs have a big rotor, and need a stiffer R+ rotor spring swapped into them to really wake them up.  With the stiffer spring you get a pretty awesome blend of distance mixed with big rotor SV control.

I have a Coastal SV as well as A Coastal 200.  I prefer both of them over my Tat Ct.  As others have stated, the Coastal SV is not a distance caster.  I can bomb casts with the Coastal 200 but that might be because of the rod, and size of lures I use with it.  Both reels get used on a regular basis in salt water, and are like new condition after 3 years of use.  I just saw this post, and all ready the bait monkey has climbed on my back screaming Coastal 80.  He has been screaming in my ear for over a year about the new Zillion and I have been able to resist.  I fear I may cave on this new Coastal.  Has anyone used the Zillion in Salt Water?  Any opinions on durability in Salt compared to a Coastal?

Any chance you know what the part number on that spring is or where to get it? Thx

I would avoid double-supported pinion gear, if not, by bushing, in saltwater reels. Very susceptible region to salt accumulation.

No SV reel is oriented to long casting, but to be a Jack-of-all-trades over lure weights.

I've been thinking of getting the Coastal TW80. I have two new rods that need reels and wanted to see if anyone had more to add to this. Also, I saw this while researching this reel on another forum. Daiwa needs a new marketing term.

I have 1 i love. Bombs casts and palms really well. I wish they made it in a xh model.

Would you mind posting the schematic?
