Kev-mo Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 My mom brought us kids to see the theatre version of Hair back in 79. Why... because my mom's pretty cool!! The classics as well as animated and semi current have been brought up and I've seen a lot of them so I guess I like musicals. No one's mentioned Glee yet...so I guess I will. Say what you will, six seasons is decent run. I also think they did a good really job with it. Plus Sue Sylvester's character was flipping hilarious! Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 12, 2022 Super User Posted July 12, 2022 I’ve never been to a live one. Actually, come to think of it, I did get 2 free tickets to “ Fiddler on the Roof” So I took a date and we had a good time, even though I had somehow gotten the impression beforehand that it was about a hillbilly fiddling up on a roof of his cabin in the mountains.? My mom liked some of the old ones because she was nearly a genius musically. The other three that I somewhat enjoyed were “ Seven brides for seven brothers “ and “Oklahoma “, because they were westerns , and “ South pacific “, because Ive always been interested in the pacific theatre of ww2. Fallser Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 I'm probably a lot older than ya'll but I grew up with them in the 50's. They were popular in the 30's, 40's and 50's. They were distractions, escape and positive. They always had a happy ending or taught a positive lesson. I still enjoy them, because they are an escape, have a couple drinks, smoke a couple of.....cigarettes. Just forget about wokeness, CRT, MAGA and whatever else torques you off. I think "American in Paris" may be the best musical. "Singing in the Rain, Brigadoon, On The Town and "Yankee Doodle Dandy"(Cagney sings, Cagney dances). Not sure folks consider it a musical, but "Fantasia" way ahead of its time. A great movie to get stoned/high/drunk, or whatever and watch. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted July 14, 2022 Super User Posted July 14, 2022 I worked as a stagehand for the first part of my career and musicals were a mixed bag. On one hand, they are large, complex productions, so you can get a ton of hours off of one. On the other though, you spend most of that money on drink to help you drive those songs out of your head. I did four months touring with CATS! and that was all I could take, no idea how people can stand to do the same show for years and years. 1 Quote
Trox Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 My wife absolutely LOVES musicals and theater... I could care less, but I go. Believe it or not, I have enrolled in a theatre appreciation class at a local college that starts this coming Fall semester because of this. Nothing says "babe, you should go fishing tomorrow" like me taking the initiative to have a date at the theatre... I just wish I enjoyed them at least a litle bit... hence, the class. How cool would that be for me to learn how to enjoy it, and win browny points by doing something I like as well... Will it work? we shall see. We go to the "famous" Majestic theatre here in San Antonio, for what it's worth. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 15, 2022 Super User Posted July 15, 2022 I saw Silence Of The Lambs but the girl singing in the van scene needed voice lessons. Quote
schplurg Posted July 18, 2022 Posted July 18, 2022 Grease is the only musical I can sit through (the movie). Other than that I detest musicals. As soon as a song starts I'm gone. Most of the movies I see listed above are not musicals, but I may be misreading as I didn't read the whole thread (I hate musicals that much) 9 to 5, Spinal Tap and Blues Brothers are not musicals. Even Pink Floyd The Wall is not a musical, and it's all music. Quote
