garroyo130 Posted July 9, 2022 Posted July 9, 2022 Trying to get into swimbaits and looking for recommendations. I will be using an irod magic stick (rated1/2-2oz) and a Tatula 200 spooled with 20lb something or other. This will be my first venture into true swimbaits and am looking for recommendations for a quarry that I fish where the main forage is bluegill. Looking to fish in 10-15ft of water. *Edit - this probably belongs in tackle Quote
Big Rick Posted July 9, 2022 Posted July 9, 2022 The MegaBass Magdraft is a great option. The 6 inch size fits the weight range you're hunting. If the quarry is full of stuff that'll hang you up there's a freestyle option as well that can be weedless. I use it to skip under docks and low hanging tree limbs. Also, Big Bite Baits has a really good B5 line thru swim bait as well that fits your weights. It comes with a #4 treble hook. 4 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted July 9, 2022 Super User Posted July 9, 2022 A skinny dipper on a Seibert jig is my favorite "swimbait" It comes in at a little over 7" and it catches fish everywhere I fish it. Maybe I do need a 3/4 oz swim jig... 2 2 Quote

Maybe I do need a 3/4 oz swim jig... The big skinny dipper on a 3/4oz uoze has been a good one for me, so much roll and money. I second @Big Rick 's recs. I also really like scottsboro ( 6"& 6" Fatty) and gambler (Big EZ and Big GZ) swimbaits, and if you want a bluegill imitator the savage gear 4" LB and RTF have gotten vicious strikes and good fish for me, but not numbers yet. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Savage_Gear_Pulse_Tail_LB_Bluegill_Swimbaits_4/descpage-SGPTLBB.html https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Savage_Gear_Pulse_Tail_RTF_Bluegill_Swimbaits/descpage-SGRTFBG.html scott 1 Quote
MontclairDave Posted July 9, 2022 Posted July 9, 2022 All good recommendations. I’ve had a lot of success on the Gambler EZ regular size (I think around 4.75 inches) on a 1/4 ounce 5/0 swimbait hook. You can definitely throw that on any all-around MH baitcaster. The Beast Coast Miyagi Swinmer also has caught me a bunch of biguns. About 5” bait, works good on a 6/0 Owner Beast. Definitely need a wide hook gap on the Miyagi. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted July 10, 2022 Super User Posted July 10, 2022 The Irod IRG754F is a good rod for wake and glide baits with treble hooks to 2 oz. Basstrix 6” ( 5 1/4”) hollow body paddle tail or similar lures. Works good for 6” Huddleston ( not the 68). 3:16 6” & 7” Mission Fish, the weedless original line through. Spro BB1Z 40 rat, R2S 168 S-Waver etc. Tom 1 Quote
