I recently sold a rod to a guy in Alabama.  I had a pvc tube to put it in.  I packed it up and went to the UPS store expecting to pay around $40 for shipping.  They measured it and weighed it then told me that shipping would be $248.00.  I ran screaming from the store.

I drove to the USPS office where I got it shipped, including extra insurance, for $32.00.  Is this a normal thing with UPS being so expensive?

Yep - and FedEx as well.

UPS stores may be independent franchises that are not operated by UPS itself, so their pricing for shipment and even shipping containers/materials can be more expensive than one would expect.

Even shipping at USPS has gone up.

Lady there told me anything over 30" is oversized now.

Last two rods i shipped out were $38 and $34. That wasn't even going to the west coast. It used to normally cost $17 to $29 only.

Shipping cheaper rods is not even worth it anymore.

I always ship rods with USPS, shipping cost usually anywhere from $10-25 depending on rod value/insurance. I had a Daiwa Tatula rod that one of the guides came out of the wrap/epoxy, I shipped it from here in Nebraska to California to Daiwa Corp for under $10.00.

I also use Pirate Ship for a majority of my shipping so I usually get discounted prices, I always keep a few rod tubes around just in case or if I decide to sell or try something different.
