DinkDreams Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Hey all, Recently, I lost a guide on my Abu Garcia Vendetta M/F rod so I’m in the market for a new rod and was looking to upgrade. I have my eye on the 703C (MH/F) I plan to use the rod mostly for keel weighted swimbaits, spinnerbaits, a little bit of squarebill fishing (when it isn’t too grassy) and bladed jigs. Basically a power fishing moving bait setup. Would I be better off going with the MF action of the cranking rod or the Fast action of the 703C? Also, any recommendations around that price point are welcome! Quote
ironbjorn Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 703c is a better, more versatile rod. It's great for squarebills, and serviceable for 3/16 oz - 5/16 oz spinnerbaits. The 705cb is pretty noodly and makes a better jerkbait rod imo. A 704c would be a better choice for your 3/8 - 1/2 oz spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, and is still a good squarebill rod. Dobyns runs a power lighter than you would expect. The 703c labeled MH/F performs more like how you would expect a M/MF to perform, and a 704c labeled H/F performs more like you would expect a MH to perform. This is very important to know when considering Dobyns. Personally, I exclusively fish Dobyns rods these days. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted July 5, 2022 Super User Posted July 5, 2022 Also remember that Dobyns 'ups' the wording - a Dobyns MH has the power of most other brand's Medium. Among my Furys - this is how I use them. 705CB - crankbaits 703C - Jerkbaits, lipless/squarebill 704C - Spinners, chatters, jigs, T-Rigs 1 1 Quote
NavyToad Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 I’d want a Dobyns 4 power for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and by that I mean a 704c, not a 704cb. I use a 704cb for jerkbaits and small crankbaits, and that’s it. Call them. It’s easy to to talk to a human and they’re very helpful. 1 (903) 919-8028 2 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted July 5, 2022 Super User Posted July 5, 2022 I agree with those guys above, a 4 power would serve you better for the listed baits, with the possible exception of the squarebills. I like my 744 Kaden alot for keitechs, swimjigs, spinnerbaits, and lipless. Quote
DinkDreams Posted July 5, 2022 Author Posted July 5, 2022 I wasn’t aware of the power difference, so thank you so much for letting me know! I think the 704c will be the move, my Abu Vengeance medium casted really well but I always felt like I had a bit more trouble getting the hook home, and it was noticeable around grass when my chatterbaits would get bogged down I couldn’t really “pop” them out 1 Quote
