Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 5, 2022 Super User Posted July 5, 2022 i rolled my kayak yesterday trying to reach a distant lake. on a steep trail. i thought i got away unscathed until i tried to dropshot. NOPE. my reel was kinda crushed. i beer-can crushed the bail for sure. then i noted the spool is kinda skewed to the side. i bent the main shaft a tiny bit. i talked to Mike at DVT, and i will send it to him for repairs (and get him to clean my SLX DC). this is the catatyst for me to try a Daiwa substitute in the interim while my main spinning is down. so i LOVE my Vanford 2500. should i get a Tatula 2500? it looks nice on paper. save a few bucks. i am shopping for similar specs under the Daiwa flag. Super User JustJames Posted July 5, 2022 Super User Posted July 5, 2022 From using both of the reels Vanford 2000 VS Tatula/Kage LT 2000, if I have to buy another reel, I would go with Tatula LT. Only downside is Tatula LT has been in the market for quite sometime and might due to new version soon. The price wise Tatula win hand down. Features wise, I think both are comparable. 6.3oz, smooth operation and smooth drag. What Vanford has that Tatula doesn’t have? MGL spool, which help lower inertia the most but to me Daiwa still very comparable. Long stroke spool, both Vanford and Tatula spool are about the same diameter and stroke. The only negative I have with Tatula is anti reverse switch (might be positive for some), because I don’t back reel and to have switch meaning to have weak spot for water to get in. Tatula offer no protection compare to Shimano with X Protect. BTW Vanford drag sound louder and somewhat nicer than Tatula. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 5, 2022 Author Super User Posted July 5, 2022 i totally appreciate you taking the time to type this out for me. i dont use the anti reverse either but will try it to fight a fish once. (maybe once only). drag noise. i never knew it was a thing, but now having the Vanford, i get it. hahah. i bought the Tatula 15 minutes ago. getting 20% off was just too low hanging of fruit for me to resist. $160!! i think my Vanford is repairable, so i am not getting off that ride anytime soon. i have plans to hook a big OK striper on it. HAH! thanks, Mr Socal. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 I have both the Vanford and Tatula LT. I also have the Stradic CI4+, Complex XR, Ballistic LT, Procyon LT, Daiwa theory. All these reels are great. The tatula and ballistic are pretty much the same reel. The Vanford and the Complex xr are pretty much the same reel. The tatula can usually be found for a much lower price point, which is a great deal. I think you'll be happy with it. 1 Quote

Super User JustJames Posted July 6, 2022 Super User Posted July 6, 2022 I agree he made the right decision but might not be the right timing. A lot of newer Daiwa reel have gone to MQ body (no switch) bigger gear and more rigid frame. The ballistic LT is one and Caldia series in Europe (lower class than Tatula) also got one last year as well as Kage LT. If he really need the reel right now it is not a bad buy but if he can wait a few more month we might see some change. Quote

I needed the reel ASAP. same thing happened with my mountain bike I bought it about 15 minutes before they said, "here is the new model!" 1 Quote

The Daiwa MQ require special tool to remove the plate (cost 30-50 bucks) and most from aftermarket DIY. I was gonna buy one of the MQ and found out some of the tool only fit one model but not another. I’m not sure which one BG and Luvias FC? I told myself to wait longer until MQ become normal. Quote
jdr99a Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 I’ve got the vanford 3000 and the tatula 2500. As much as I like the vanford, I’d pick the tatula every time. I like the drag better on the daiwa and it just feels better in hand. It isn’t apples to apples as it’s a 2500 vs 3000 but just my experience. im thrilled with both reels and have no plans to switch or upgrade either one. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 7, 2022 Super User Posted July 7, 2022 The new Ballistic MQ would be the closest comparison. Quote
The Bassman Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 I have both in the lower gear ratios (JDM). Both are silky smooth but I still give the edge to Shimano. Their MGL rotor pretty much eliminates start up inertia. That said, when on the water such matters don't exist. Even my Fuego LT's are darn close and cost half as much. 2 Quote

This ballistic is really smooth and very low inertia. I can tell the difference with my eyes close. If low inertia help, for me it helps some especially when jigging for panfish or shaking worm for bass, it easier for me to reel to set hook. The Vanford with MGL and counter balance rotor, vibration almost none exists when spin handle real fast where as Tatula and ballistic still show some sign. Quote
uglyasheck Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Love my Tatula LT fishes good. I have no complaits.I don't know if comparing a Tatula to a Vanford is apples to apples but the price difference may be a equilizer. Quote

Agreed, I haven’t owned the vanford but compared to the tatula the tolerances on the mq ballistic feels tighter and overall more rigid, but at the same time smoother. It’s also heavier and more tank like, but I don’t mind the weight and actually find that rock solid feel reassuring. Definitely worth the small premium over the tat imo, I got mine with a discount for just over $200 from a local store. I’d also consider the jdm luvias which can be had around $250 Quote
E-H Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 Old thread I know …but I have a vanford and Procyon 2500s (step under the Tatula) and they are both awesome but I prefer the Procyon a little more. Just feels better to cast. I imagine the Tatula is even sweeter. Curious -Darth how do you like the Tatula? I am looking for another procyon or Tatula at some point. Quote
msgf91 Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 The new Tatula MQ came out recently. I saw a few videos on it and it sounds interesting. The weight went up slightly over the LT but it has the new AirDrive. I don't mind the increase in weight if the reel feels smoother. I think it's less marketing that got me and more the bait monkey lol Quote

The 2500 is handling Striper fine. Smooth drag. Very smooth. I was casting against the wind 3 days and finally got a knot halfway down the spool. I got my backup. Procyon AL. Less smooth drag. Heavier overall. only one more day to fish so I will respool it at home. Not dealing with it now. Quote
E-H Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 Ok. I have the Procyon LT not the AL and love it. I only fish for SMB max 4lb though, so drag isn't an issue. No monsters where I fish. Quote
