Part of me wants brands to branch out into new stuff, but if this is another doyo built reel I’ll pass.

So you want them to tool up and manufacture new models for a miniscule % of the market? Do you know how much that would cost? That's unrealistic. Better do like Cabela's and have Daiwa make your stuff.

I’d rather they choose to push the boundary and try something new than just slap my label on the same products made for 3 other brands. I understand the cost isn’t worth it for some brands, but is the cost of putting out cheap clones worth it either? I’ll never buy a Dobyns reel, and I’m sure they will end up just being sold in Walmart.

Okuma has built a new reel on a great platform which has had really positive reviews. If they just got a rebadged Lews Hypermag I guess it might have moved a few units, but I wouldn’t buy one. I will buy a Hakai because I want to support innovation. Far to many brands are just ripping off each other. I get you’ll fail 75% of the time or more when doing something new and innovative, but when you succeed you move the sport forward.

Products like the Gilly and dark sleeper clones frustrate me as a consumer. Instead of trying to improve a product you get a factory in china to pump out clones so you can hawk them on YouTube.

Okumas are banax.  The other doyo.  They did team up with dream tackle or whoever to design the spool.  I think it's cool even if it uses a banax platform.  I'll also add that the gilly has little flaps on the side of the bait that induces the swimming motion and that's key to the baits action.  The bait it is based on does not have this so I would consider this innovation even if the same flaps are found on other baits.

I was under the impression the reel was built ground up with dream, not just the spool and little bearing ends on it.

Better sealed than the Slammer. It's replacing the Torque in their lineup.

Yeah, it's an old topic on SOL.  I saw the vids like a week ago.  They say its IPX 8.  Which just means its water proof until it's not lol. The Tourqes were pretty good.  We'll see how well the Authority compares to the ZBs, VSs and Vissers soon enough.

Better comparison is the Shimano Twinpower SW (also rated IPX 8 ) and the Certate SW.

but they’re so “pure” ?

I think that’s just berkley’s thing now, unfortunately, just slightly modifying a bait so it’s not exactly a “copy.” I don’t think any of the changes they make are drastic enough to be considered innovation. So many companies push “new” baits that aren’t new. Making a silent version of your rattling crank bait is not a new bait

No, I'm comparing it to sealed reels because that's what its replacing.  Tourqe 1 and 2 are proven platforms so if Penn wants the Tourqe fans to go to the Authotiry theyre going to have to match the performance.  The Authority compares well to Certate SW and TP SW on paper.  IRL the extra weight of the Penn is going to make it very hard to convert Certate SW/TP SW users.

I'm seeing more of these stumps for grips on rods.  Are they meant just for angler that palm the reel when casting?  A normal cast would have you holding the blank.

It's one of the new trends, apparently. St.Croix Legend X has that as well, which I hate.

It's just too big of a financial risk.  We may be tired of Doyo reels, but to most consumers it's a proven manufacturer with proven designs, so why would new brands risk it and try something new? At least they could make even with a new Doyo reel. Okuma may hit a homerun with the Hakai, but not many brands are like Okuma that has the money to adventure a bit.

Dream Tackle is a Chinese aftermarket customer part studio. Hakai seems to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Okuma and Dream Tackle.

I am so exited for new Curado DC 200, It is first 200 size DC as far as I know. I hope the make 300 size as well.

The redesigned Tatula XT rods look very promising and $10 cheaper over the previous generation. The design elements were definitely lent from the Fuego, which is a steal at $79.
