Heavier Weight Frog

My current frog setup is a Daiwa Aird X heavy/fast and the rod is an absolute broomstick. Right now I am using booyah pad crashers which weigh 1/2oz. Trying to cast them is incredibly frustrating as it is hard to cast accurately because they don't sufficiently load the rod. I toyed with the idea of getting a new frog rod but can't justify that when I have never even caught a fish on a frog. Haha. Instead I would like to get some heavier weight frogs that cast better on my setup. Most of the highly regarded/recommended frogs online are either 1/2 oz or 5/8oz. I saw a couple that are more than 5/8 like the megabass big gabot and jackal gavacho but both of those are pretty expensive and have poor reviews on tacklewarehouse. Anyone have experience with any of the bigger/heavier frogs and can recommend a couple I could try?

Don't let reviews hinder you from getting the Jackall Gavacho. This is by far my favorite popping/walking frog. The hookup ratios are amazing. And they are tough as nails. Since they weigh 2/3rd oz you can nearly spool your reel on a bomb cast. I catch hundreds of frog fish every year and this is my favorite frog.

Yeah, you want some tip and backbone with a good frog rod for sure, in the mean time, you can weigh your existing frogs, specially if you are sledding them over slop, which is almost a necessity.

Spro brought out a new size 70 in their popping frog which weighs 3/4oz.

If your having a lot of trouble with the lower weight frogs I would look for a new Rod.  You are missing out on many good frogs. With the 4th of July sales going on now I  would look into a rod. This is a excellent one https://dobynsrods.com/product/dc-736c-fh/ 

Now for a heavy frog, The River2SEA Matt Daddy is 3/4 oz & the Spro King Daddy is 1 oz.

The FishLab Rattle Toad is a great frog and comes in 3 sizes, the biggest is over an ounce. They have a popping version now also.

This! You can find them almost anywhere locally and they are IMHO the softest frog on the market (the black colors are probably the softest period). You will catch your first frog fish on it.

If I had to pick a single frog out of my 60+ frogs it'd be without a second thought be a Jackall Gavacho.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I am going to pick up a gavacho and a scum frog launch frog since those had the most suggestions and are affordable

No offense to anyone who suggested the Launch Frog, but it's one of my worst casting frogs. It's light and catches wind. However, it's ridiculously soft, so hookups are excellent. Get it for that, but for bombing on a stiffer rod? I don't think so. X2 on the FishLab Rattle Toad. Even the middle size at 21 grams can be blasted way out there on a heavier stick. Just another option to consider.

Not sure it's going to meet your weight requirements but I'd strongly recommend the new Bobby's perfect. It's actually perfect. I have the gavacho, the scum, etc... I have been so impressed with the Bobby's perfect I havent been able to take it off. And I don't do anything to it out of the package. It's not as soft as the scum frog but it's still ultra soft compared to anything else. It walks insanely good, and I can bomb it a mile! I've caught 20+ fish on it now and it's still almost like I just took it out of the package!

 

If you want heavy heavy without going oversized and ARE NOT fishing over matts and slop then that Bully Wa 2 size 65 also great! Plastic is not as soft but you can toss it forever away and it also walks like a dream! 

 

My sneaky other fav is the Terminator. It comes in a slightly smaller size but still a 1/2 oz or heavier I can't remember. In the bluegill colour it's lights out good.

While I liked this post.. I just got 2 launch’s in the mail.. hoping it casts better than the lighter scum frogs cause they don’t cast well for me.. all other I have I can bomb.. not the lighter scum frogs so curious to get out with these ..

I use heavy action rods when frog fishing and do well with LiveTarget and Booyah hollow belly frogs.

I use a 7'3" XH-XF Cabela's Tournament XT frog-specific model rod and I don't have any trouble launching the Pad Crasher. It's the standard size frog. In fact, it's my favorite frog. It is a little more difficult to sidearm under things because the tip is so stiff. In the cooler months I use it as a second jig rod, mostly for deep fishing. Maybe try adjusting your reel's cast control a bit looser.

I hadn't considered a soft plastic frog. Any idea what the weight on it is? What is your preferred rigging? Seems appealing since achieving a good action will be easier from a seated position in the kayak as opposed to a regular frog.

I have the Daiwa Tatula 7'4" H/F frog rod, which is probably similar in power and action. My frog of choice is the LiveTarget 2 1/4" which says it weighs 5/8oz. Never have a problem with casting distance, and the larger one throws even further.
