Squarebill rod

I’m looking for a new squarebill rod. What do you guys like? Why do you like those particular models? Do you like glass rods or not for them?

I prefer my 7'1" MF St. Croix Mojo Bass, I have tried them on my Lews stuff, and on my Mojo Bass Glass stuff, and I just find that for this technique (I suppose I should specify in the 1.5 or so size) that rod just does the deal for me, it's got enough backbone that you can feel the bill deflecting and enough backbone to turn fish diving for color, but has a soft enough tip to still get a decently long cast.

No glass or cranking rod for me, a medium or MH rod depending on the size of the square bill that bends to at least half way down without locking out and 12-25 lb mono, depending on what I am doing.

I like a graphite Med, Mod Heavy. As of lately I have been using a Dobyns Kaden KD 610 4 CB F/H.I bought it to use it for jerkbaits  & it has proved to a excellent rod for that. I also have been using it for square bills & it has worked very well for that so much so that I ordered another one while the 15% 4th. of July sales are going on. This way I can have a Both baits rigged & ready to use right away.

  Depending on weight  and where I'm casting   I use a 7 foot mh or 6'6" M . I dont have a dedicated squarebill rod .

Powell Diesel 705CB is a pretty good rod for the price under $100, I have a couple of them, I use one for crankbaits & the other one for bladed jigs/chatterbaits.

I'm a big fan of the St. Croix Legend Tournament series. The "glass" rods aren't what you might think. They use glass in place of a portion of the SCIV and SCVI carbon carbon fiber. This makes the rods feel like carbon rods but fish like glass rods. To our knowledge, this has never been done before. I stress, these are not composite rods, but an all-NEW technology!

I personally like 2 different rods but they both have a relatively soft tip and a good backbone. For smaller 1-1/2”-2” 1/4-3/8oz which I throw the most as I fish retention ponds mostly, I like my 6’-10 Lews Carbon Fire (original Wynn grips)or Lews Hank Parker rod, same blank and guides. Unfortunately they don’t make either series anymore but I’m sure you can find an equivalent in another Lews line. Going larger 2-1/2”- 3-1/2” 3/8-3/4 oz.I’ve used my bps crankin stick in 7’-3” hvy and I’m happy with it but I don’t throw it very often as I’m not fishing big enough water to justify the size of the fish I’m catching. Im planning on adding a 7’-0”Okuma TCS med plus in the future which I feel would fall perfectly in between. As for now any rod I can use for spinner baits also is my preference.

I don't throw Squarebills in wood, only rock. I prefer a mh/fast, 12-17 lb. Copoly or flouro, 6:something to 1 reel speed. I think it gives me better control of deflection and less hangups. I have absolutely no problems with hooking or landing fish. Brian.

I really love glass or composite for sq bills. I have 2 rods I throw sq bills with, one is glass and one is composite, about 2/3's of the rod in the butt section is graphite and the last 1/3 at the tip is glass. Neither are rods that are available today but plenty of companies make 7' Med glass and those should be awesome for 1.5 size sq bills and so much fun to fish.

I like a 7’ mod-fast or fast graphite for ripping off submerged grass. Glass, composite and blend rods work well over rip rap, gravel and around wood and light to medium cover.
