I’ve thrown these extensively. IMO, MH/F is best. Throw them with your spinnerbait rod and call it a day!!

By softer you mean a more moderate taper? Instead of fast? I agree based on my experience with spinnerbaits.

Yep. Softer rod = slower action in my brain lol

All this “specialization” is just an effort to get fishermen to buy more stuff. Period. End of sentence.

I’ve been fishing the same Cabela’s branded rods since the 1990’s…they do fine. Fish what you got.

It worked!

But I've got rods in both actions (Fast and Med.Fast / Mod.Fast).  :(

I'll use a spinnerbait on any rod other than a dedicated crankbait rod.  Problem is I can't catch enough fish around here to ascertain which action suits me best.

No one's really pushing any "special" rods here, all that's really being talked about is a rod blanks power and taper in regard to a specific lure. You can call it splitting hairs but there are advantages to be gained by a well thought out balance of rod length, power, taper, lure type, line type/diameter, hook gauge/style etc

Especially with this particular lure. I've probably lost more big fish on this bait than all other baits combined. I've also caught alot on it. It was a love/hate relationship for a long time. Now it's mostly just love. A MH/MF rated to 1 1/2oz and 30# braid is putting a high percentage of bites in the boat.

With a MH F it was a much lower percentage, even when using mono or flouro. FOR ME, a chatterbait requires a very specific rod blank.

: ) Works on me when it comes to lures / bait-monkey!!!

I keep telling myself I don’t need a new rod, new reel…cause I know if I got my hands on the latest technology, I’d be ditching my old Cabela’s rods and hitting the Loomis site   : )

B-Hittay or Tatula for sure from those listed. I like a 7 speed for them, but will use an 8 when fishing shallow grass. They follow, grab it, and swim toward you sometimes. It's important to be able to pick up line quickly.

Forgot about my Gen1 Megabass XX Orochi Diablo Spec R.  A ***'er said "I've thrown a chatterbait on every Megabass (XX, Destroyer), Loomis (E6X, GLX, NRX), St Croix (Avid, Extreme) and Dobyns (Sierra) that I own/owned and haven't found anything that beats the Gen 1 XX Diablo Spec-R just yet."

X2 ~ I agree with the above sentiment

I believe that How & Where these baits are presented is & can be different for each Basshead.

Might be best to use what works for you.

I fish them low & slow most of the time.

If I'm coming in contact with cover, I like the composite stick.

When I'm sneaking the bait across a more open bottom, either stick works for me.

Either way, my Vibrating jig rigs are all spooled with 15 lb Tatsu.

17lb works but I get more bites with the 15 lb.

I never go under that though.

On the MH Composite Quantum KVD Stick ~

On the MH Fast St Croix Victory ~ I also use a LTB MH F on occasion.

I have fished just about every Chatterbait rod out there except the $400 Brett Hite waste of money. I can’t imagine someone paying that much money for a moving bait rod. The St. Croix Victory 7’3 MHF (The Marshall) is the best chatter bait rod I’ve found for the way I fish. It’s listed as a fast but it’s more of a mod fast taper and a little lighter than a standard MH power. I fish braid to flourocarbon leader or straight braid but I fish in heavy hydrilla lakes in Florida and haven’t found a better rod. I’ve fished glass rods and composite but they aren’t for me and I can’t fish straight flourocarbon

Lakes in Ontario and Quebec are filled with grass, the perfect environment for chatterbaits. I use them a ton and much like so many on this site finding the perfect combo has been a pursuit. With 4 pages of awesome observations and suggestions, I will attempt to avoid repetition and in the interests of time will be brief. I have experimented with the most logical actions and lengths given the characteristics of this moving bait and the environments to be fished.

Like most, a spinnerbait rod was the logical starting point for this moving bait. My considerations needed to include a reasonably powerful rod given the triggering effect of snapping it off of grass. This pointed me to the Loomis MBR843GLX and 844GLX first. However more than enough missed strikes obligated me to revaluate. I came to the conclusion that the blade was sucked back when inhaled, shielding the hook, and if rod sensitivity and power triggered an instantaneous hook set, fish were lost. This to me anyways, was a fundamental difference when compared to a spinnerbait.

My experimentation included JWR893NRX, original CBR906, Evergreen Glass RCSC-73HG, MBR903X GL3, BJR883 NRX+, Curado Glass CDC74MHGA, all of which had their respective virtues. In the end I really liked the performance and results of the glass rods. With this in mind I picked up every modern glass rod and ended up ordering the Shimano SLX Glass 72MHG. I used the word "modern" because glass rods today are very different than the old glass rods I grew up fishing. The SLX rod was unquestionably the best rod for the way I like to fish chatterbaits. (1) The rod is lightweight (relative term), (2) loads easily for all-day casting, (3) sufficiently slow to allow the blade to reposition away from the hook (4) the large diameter butt section benefits from hoop strength which yields ample stiffness to snap the bait off the weeds. With such a great price point, I always have two loaded and ready for chatterbaits ranging from 3/8-5/8oz. Beyond this, I also include the IMX Pro 969C CBR (8' XH crankbait) when I slow roll 3/4-1.5oz baits in deeper water.

For those interested my complete setup includes the Curado DC 150 (6.2) and 20lb P-Line original fluorocarbon.

Anyone throw chatterbaits on the Megabass P5 Dark Sleeper rod? Looking for something to specifically throw single hook moving baits (Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, swimjigs, weedless underspins). If so what type of line and size are you throwing? Looking for a rod that can do all that in the Megabass line since the rod actions are super versatile. Open to other P5 suggestions. I know people say the javelin and daemos are great for that too.

Fish primarily in grassy lakes in southern WI. Would be nice to have a rod that can roll cast accurately into tight lanes, and also be able to launch across grass flats.

Thanks,

Umair
