I’ve always used Trilene XL and like it, never had any issues. Only other monos I’ve used are XT and Big Game though. Starting to switch mostly to Fluoro now that there’s Seaguar Basix. A really good Fluoro for not much more than decent mono

Pure fishing berkley lines are fine... but zebco omniflex seems to work just as good for 2.30ish (900 yard) a spool due to inflation, used to be 1.50.

Keep in mind the only thing between you and a bass of your lifetime is your line.

Oh Lord NO. Omniflex is nowhere near as good as BG, XL, XT.

Original XL was extra limp and XT was extra tough. Today no difference in the line except XL is .001 diameter smaller.

Are you saying there's no difference between XL and XT except diameter per # test, or no difference between the new and old formulas except XL is slightly smaller diameter than it used to be?

***EDIT*** just to be clear, this is a joke. I am not a mod and no warnings have been applied for recommending omniflex

Absolutely, I don't use it much anymore but it was good for the riprap on the bay because it was cheap to replace. Have been using your sunline/Maxima reccomendations for my nicer polymers

I have been dissapointed with Bg, had wierd thin spots throughout the spool I bought.

In my opinion BG is like cheap fluorocarbon except it’s extremely thick and rubbery feeling when more than 10’ of line is out.   ?  I know it’s decent line for the money(cheap)but the constant recommendations for it make me cringe.

PS.  If you’re wondering what they have in common it is the unwieldy handling.

Never had that issue. Omniflex is stiff and breaks easily.

Subjective, usdm lines that don't break easily are often twice as strong as rated

Omniflex is essentially the same diameter as Big Game. 12lb for example is .013 for Omni and .014 for BG. The fact is Omniflex is stiff and brittle.

Perhaps, tho its going to be nearly impossible to notice with 12lb line on bass, even big bass, as line that hefty wrenches fish in anyways, but that's another topic about bass fishing culture being overkill on equiptment.

Hi thank you for your opinion. You will now be taken into the alley by us Big Game fanboys where you will be shot.

I've used both these lines over the years. Both have been good overall. These two lines are readily available at any place that sells tackle, and are still very popular.                                             My question is, does anyone else seem to notice that Trilene XL has changed?  I'm not sure what's happened here, but it's not the XL I've used in years past. I've been using Big Game mono on casting reels for years, with no problems. At least for now, I'll pick Stren between these two lines. Has anyone else noticed poor performance from XL? Also, I'm open to suggestions for a reasonably priced mono line for 6 or 8lb weight.

Berkley has changed most of their mono lines over the years, not sure if it was intentional or not, but it's a thing.

Or, he can show up spooled with Tatsu and a PopMax, and get his butt handed to him by BG and an Academy popper. I own about 12 PopMax poppers, and I have never bought one. I have a couple more lined up next month...

I thought we were keeping our mouths shut about those Academy poppers?? I won’t even tell you about cleaning house this past weekend on a 2.00 Ozark Trail popper from Walmart........

Get Sufix elite. You'll never look back if what you want is a great handling mono.

Sufix Advance is also really good, although I still do like Elite - it's strong and takes a beating and handles well.

I have always had issues with how Trilene XL handles on casting gear, so I generally avoid it.

I tried Advance - hated it - tossed the spool,

I'll stick with Elite - it's been very good to me.

Interesting. What was your problem with Advance?

I dunno if it was a bad spool - but the 10# I bought was way too wiry.

The 12# Elite I have is WAY more supple.

I will agree with that. Advance is definitely a bit stiffer, but I haven't had any issues with it. Elite already runs on the stiffer side.

I used XL from 1954-1986 when I quit fishing for 23 years.  It treated me well, but I wanted to try different lines when I got back into fishing.  No idea about the quality of XL these days.  I've got 3000 yard spools of 8# and 12# AN40 of which there will be some left when I'm gone.  I like it better than the Big Game I have.  I'm a fan of Sufix Elite and Siege.  Especially the Neon Tangerine.  Am also trying a few other lines.

I caught a deal on Contra from Strike King. It's what most of my fluoro and my one mono reel are spooled with. So far, so good.
