Boat Carpet

So me and my old man are fixing a jon boat up that we've had sitting around for a while.  We plan on painting it and installing some swivel mounts on the front and back row.  Anyways we have some plywood boards that were in the floor board but they have some nasty green carpet on them and I was wondering where I could get some gray carpet to put on instead.  Also, give me the cheapest route if possible cause I know carpet can be expensive.  Thanks guys.

Bass Pro or Cabela's both sell boat carpet. You can also use the outdoor carpet that is sold at Home Depot or Lowes. The thing to look for is some kind that has a rubber backing. A few years ago when I was fixing up a 14' jon. I think we found some closeout/remnant stuff at one of those big box stores and got an 8'x8' piece for around $30. You just need to look around and get a little lucky(same way I fish )

For my latest project I used a piece of that real low loop commercial carpet that I've had rolled up in the basement for years, it wont last as long as real outdoor carpet but it was free. My boat also lives in the garage and on days when it's raining more than a few showers I usually dont go out or stay out on the water.

Agreed!  Lowes or Home Depot for the outdoor rubber backed carpet!

Wal mart in the auotmotive section. They have cutloop carpet for $13 a 12x8 roll. Get the adhesive from HomeDepot or Lowes. Its good looking carpet in a couple different colors made to replace auto carpet. Doesnt look like it will eat hooks like the looped carpet from HD and its not plastic like outdoor green and is super soft, its definatly going in my v-hull this fall/winter.

I just did my boat. I used indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. 6x8 for $17. At my local store they have black, grey,blue, green, and tan. looks great and no problems with hooks. good luck

Thanks guys.  Another question though, what kind of plywood to put in?  Some pieces of our old plywood are rotted.

Marine grade plywood will last longer than treated wood. if you will look around for a automotive upholstery outlet, they usually carry marine carpet, fastners, glue, and most anything you will need for your project. mike 8-)

Regular plywood and seal it yourself with some poly.

If you're wise  , use marine grade carpet . The hooks will snag super bad on the indoor-outdoor carpet.

I don't know if you have an "ollies" in your area but I picked up a 20x10 needle punch carpet patch for 50 bucks and if you have any construction sites around you may be able to pick up some scrap pressure treated plywood or some regular plywood for a little bit of nothing or even free if you ask the right person and do what TopDog suggested and seal it yourself.

Im building right now, and I used regular 1/2'' pywood and treated it myself last night!  Also picked up 30' x 6' to carpet the entire boat(floor/sides/deck and all) for $88 at home depot!  They have 2 different types of indoor/outdoor carpet and have samples.  I took both samples home and did a "hook test" on both to determine which one I wanted!

Good call on the plywood, marine or pressure treated plywood has metals/chemicals in it that react badly with the aluminum of a lot of jon boats.

Here, here.  I used that Lowes/HD stuff.  If a hook even looked at it it was snagged and removing the hook wound up ripping the loops which wound up with a long runner.  The stuff didn't hold up too well in high traffic areas either.

If you're looking for carpet as cheap as you can get, will hold up and NOT snag hooks look at BPS or Cabela's for their 16oz. boat carpet.

I re-floored & carpeted my boat this spring. I used 3/4" douglas fir (a/c), and Cabelas' 16 oz. carpet, and their latex glue. I first treated the wood with a 2 yr. waterproof sealer from Olympic. Although the glue didn't work very good on the alum. lids, it did stick well on the wood. Good luck and buy more than you think you need.....
