Super User gim Posted June 21, 2022 Super User Posted June 21, 2022 I normally consider a jerk bait more of a pre-spawn cold water technique. However, the other day when I was fishing, I still had one tied on from a trip in May and I thought I'd give it a try. Sure enough, on the third cast, a nice 17 incher smacked it. I continued to catch 3 more quality largemouth doing this in the next 90 minutes, when nothing else was working very well. Weeds have become to get thick, water temps are increasing, and a jerk bait with trebles just doesn't seem like a summer time lure. But if it works, why not use it? Who else tosses them in the summer? 3 Quote

LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY!!! The maiden voyage! Perhaps the water clarity is playing a role with the jerkbaits? I did notice that it was still pretty clear because there probably hasn't been much of an algae bloom yet. Quote

Super User Bird Posted June 21, 2022 Super User Posted June 21, 2022 Like you I typically throw them more during prespawn but 2 years ago the wife and I were camping on Philpott lake in VA and caught my biggest fish of the year in August throwing a suspending Jerkbait. This time of year I'm focused on top water and soft plastics but really should be more open minded with bait selection. If they hit a soft swimbait in warmer water, why not a Jerkbait. 2 Quote
VolFan Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 Oh baby! A big rapala waked or slow retrieve 1-2 ft down is one of my favorite summer baits. I take off the mid treble and upsize the other two hooks slightly. 2 Quote
throttleplate Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 My wife tossed this berkley rip-stop last saturday in a heavilly fished bank area and she caught bass, pike and snagged a carp. Then this happened, 23 inches of great tasting fish. I was standing next to her saying its time to pack up when it hit and it dragged her line around from right to left and i watched in amazement her fighting this fish unknown to us what it was before she landed it. 12 Quote

It doesn't count, it was hooked on outside of mouth.......foul. ? 3 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 22, 2022 Global Moderator Posted June 22, 2022 I fish the Duo Realis Rozante 77sp a lot in the summer. The shad spawn produces lots of small baitfish the bass feed heavily on so it's a good imitation. I like to fish it really fast with little to no pause. 1 Quote

Deephaven Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 A jerk is a year round go to bait for me. I switch to floaters and a more aggressive retrieve as the water warms. Behind a frog it is my number one confidence bait...but I will say they seem to work better up north than in the metro. 14 hours ago, MN Fisher said: Keep those ideas coming, man - tentative schedule for the F-9 is to launch on Monday the 27th. Super User Choporoz Posted June 22, 2022 Super User Posted June 22, 2022 I use them all summer, but mostly in pretty specific situations. Whenever I graph fish on big points up off the bottom from 5 to about 15 feet from the surface, I like a jerkbait. Traps and cranks work, too, but I like the ability to pause in mid-column Quote

JS Patterson Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 Once the water becomes hot, It seems that the fish respond better to longer pauses for me. It becomes similar to winter fishing but that probably varies depending on the body of water. Quote

PotatoLake Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 @Bluebasser86 I like your Rozante approach to matching the tiny shad. I wonder if that X-Nanahan from Megabass would also work under the same idea. @gimruis Great topic, Ive had bites during post spawn/ summer, throwing a Jackal Rerange and a Lucky Craft Flash Pointer when I see schoolers slashing at bait balls. I wouldn’t say I’ve lit them up, but they’ve worked decently. Quote

I'd forgot I even had a couple of them until you asked about them ? 1 Quote
