It's a safe bet he wasn't using BFS gear to catch that. :)

There is an episode of River Monsters when he targets those freshwater sting rays in southeast Asia.  If I remember correctly he's in Thailand.  His rod actually breaks in half after a couple of hours fighting it too.

I didn’t know a ray was considered a fish.

And I thought the world record freshwater sturgeon was considerably bigger than that…

That’s the quality of news you get on the internet, he was only about 500 pounds short but let’s call it a record

There are species of stingrays that are fresh water based. Most of them are small, and aquarium owners buy them. But some can grow to impressive size.
