Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 So, in the 90's there was an Etiquette both on the driving range as well as on the course. This seems to have gone out the window in the last couple of years. Noise is prevalent, people taking so loud I can hear them from 20 yards away. Mostly people Trying to teach a beginner how to hit a golf ball, yet 99% of these guys can't hit a drive more than 125 yards, and have No idea how to begin to teach the golf swing, but if you insist on trying, keep your dang voice Down. Then there's the people that pour a bucket of ball into their tray ( the plastic kind ) just when I'm at the top of my swing. And what is it, especially during this time with covid, people Coughing like crazy, yet Never bother to cover their mouth, very annoying. Then there's the guy or gal that brings family and or friends to the range, and when that person hits a decent shot, the whole group decides to cheer very loudly. This is not a contest or the family fun center. Some people actually come to work on their swing. I use to like going to the range, have many friends there, but lately it's getting to be a battle of the nerves. People just don't seem to care about anyone around them any longer. IMHO, there should be a set of common rules that everyone should have a copy of, After all, golf is a Quiet sport. Oh, and yep I've said something to those folks about the noise, they say, oh sorry, then 5 mins later, it's the same deal. Any of you golfing folks experience any of this ? Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 I realized about ten years ago that there was no way I could fish and golf. So I haven't been to a range in a long while, but it doesn't surprise me. Your rant isn't a lot different than so many threads about rude fishermen. You probably had a huge covid surge in golf....I'll bet there's a million idiot instasnaptok posts of kids doing stupid crap on the course and range....Top Golf bills itself not as a swing improvement facility, but an 'Entertainment Destination' .... and well, lots of people just suck nowadays....but back in my day..... 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 I believe that gallery noise got going with Tiger Woods. He seemed to encourage it. 1 Quote

I came to a similar conclusion a few years ago too. It's expensive, very time consuming, and requires regular practice to stay in good form. I used to play JV and Varsity in HS too, in a competitive suburban conference. I got my handicap down to single digits for 18 holes. It was fun and was really good at it, but I was able to practice or play almost every day for months on end. My Father plays several times/week but he's retired too so he has the time for it. When I bought my own boat in 2015, I had to make a choice: fish or golf. Playing golf once a month is a recipe for disaster, and its not very fun when you are a hack out there. At times I miss it, but I'd rather be fishing than golfing. Its that simple. I don't think the driving range has the same etiquette as the actual course does. Its never been a real quiet place in my experience, unless there's only a few people around. People are usually relatively quiet and respectful on the putting green. 2 Quote
padlin Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 During the week is/was the only times I would hit the range. I'd also go to the grass area as opposed to the rubber tees. Most folks on the grass are there to practice as opposed to the mats where you get folks just out to have fun. Always had the practice bunkers to myself too. Gave it up as the joints deteriorated. 1 Quote

There's a machine dispensing the balls making noise, depending on where you go. It's often right next to the parking lot. Phones ringing. Dumping balls into your tray is kind of part of it. I think the noise is good for practice. I don't recall Tiger ever encouraging people to get loud while he or anyone else took their shot. Perhaps golf would be more entertaining if they could! That would be funny to see. It might even be easier once you got used to it, rather than worrying about someones candy wrapper making noise. 1 Quote
Crankin4Bass Posted June 21, 2022 Posted June 21, 2022 I think it's part of the overall increase in rudeness in our society. I cringe when I see all the yahoos in the gallery at PGA tour events with their phones out yelling "Get in the hole!" My advice is go at the crack of dawn to hit balls if you can. Like most activities, it's usually the serious people at that time of day. 2 Quote
VolFan Posted June 21, 2022 Posted June 21, 2022 I don’t think the range has ever been a quiet spot - I say that within reason., no air horns. Our range sells buckets of beer and has party packages. I think it’s Top Golf that’s pushed ranges. Now they’re a destination, not a place to work on your game. Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted June 21, 2022 Super User Posted June 21, 2022 I've got several buddies that say if I love the quiet solitude of bass fishing that I should get into golf. Then in the same breathe they have many of the same complaints you have about noise and lack of etiquette. For that reason I stay away as I already deal with enough trashy drunk jackasses being obnoxious and leaving trash in my fishing travels. Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 21, 2022 Super User Posted June 21, 2022 Not a golfer, but it would be fun to use the ponds for a fishing tournament ?. Each pond would be a “ hole” and there’d be a time limit on each one, record what’s caught, and move on to the next one. You could even use golf terms like a hole in one if you caught a fish on the first cast or something. You could use the golf carts for all your stuff, even have a fishing bag and your caddy could choose a rod based on the situation… Sorry, couldnt help it. If I golfed , I probably wouldnt like it either. Maybe complain to management about it. Quote

Super User Koz Posted June 22, 2022 Super User Posted June 22, 2022 I used to live on Hilton Head and I played a lot of golf. I mean, a LOT of golf. 72 holes on weekends and I was hitting balls 3 or 4 days a week. So I'm no stranger to the game. But I'll tell you what. I never understood how if Aaron Judge could hit a baseball 450 feet in Fenway Park with 38,000 angry, nasty Red Sox fans screaming at him why golfers get upset when someone makes a noise during their swing. I'd venture to say that hitting a 90 mph slider is a lot harder than hitting a stationary golf ball. I suppose the tradition is that all is quiet when a golfer is in action. But really, it's all in your mindset. 2 Quote

Playing as much golf as you say, tell me a noise never bothered you at the top of your swing.. If I were just pounding balls it wouldn't be a big deal. Tell me if you were say doing some paper work for your hotel and someone standing in close proximity to you began talking very loud or screaming that it wouldn't bother you..? To be honest, I expected different type of replies, especially from current or past golfers. Que the song Sympathy For The Devil.. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted June 22, 2022 Super User Posted June 22, 2022 I used to golf a lot and was a pretty decent stick. Haven't been in a couple years though. Noise never bothered me, especially on the range. But the group I played in always had a radio going in at least one cart, maybe more, so I wasn't worried about noise. In fact it was a bigger surprise if no one was talking during your swing. I listen to the radio when I fish as well, so maybe I just need some noise. LOL 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 22, 2022 Author Super User Posted June 22, 2022 Well, I've noticed other people give folks that are talking loud, or laughing loud the ole Stink Eye, but they never said anything, unlike them, I say something in a polite way. What gets me is they oh, sorry, then 5 mins. later they are right back at it, so it's not just me that doesn't appreciate the noise. Hey, if noise doesn't bother some folks, imho at least have some consideration for those that do. Quote

The issue here is people don't expect it, so they get ticked off. If your mindset and routine are that you expect there will be noise at some point, it won't distract you. Your comment about my work is off base as well. As General Manager, I'm responsible for everything and face disruptions all day long. Phones, guests, vendors, clients, associates, it's non-stop every day. Sure, it's a giant pain when I have an important deadline, can't get any rhythm going, and a one hour project takes three because all of the disruptions. But that's the way things are. 2 Quote

Junger Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 I usually go at night when it dies down and bring a small dram and hit off the grass to avoid that nonsense. I can deal with the noise, I put on AirPods and music when I hit, but when people have their relatives or something and they’re just sitting there for social hour and moving around during your swing, that drives me nuts. I simply just start banging the divider during the offenders backswing until they ask me to stop and the I ask them to reciprocate. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 23, 2022 Global Moderator Posted June 23, 2022 I was going to post they may not know to be quiet, but @Hammer 4 told them to be quiet and they still didn’t so that’s out once in college we were bowling , None of us knew that you weren’t supposed to bowl at the same time the guy next to you bowled. A guy came over ready to kill us all over it, fun game Quote
