Jeffrey Walker Posted June 19, 2022 Posted June 19, 2022 I want to get into BFS. can anyone suggest a completed rod and reel combo. I prefer higher end stuff but just want it to be effective. i had a bfs setup and could not get the thing to cast w/o backwashing so i gave up on it. i need reccomendations for a casting combo, rod and reel and spinning combo
QED Posted June 19, 2022 Posted June 19, 2022 For BFS: Shimano Shimano 22 Aldebaran BFS XG Shimano Poison Adrena 163L BFS For Finesse Spinning (which is not encompassed by the term BFS): Shimano Stella FK 1000 Shimano Poison Adrena 267ML The items need to be procured separately so while the result is a combo, they are not generally sold as bundles. Since you prefer high end stuff, you should give this serious consideration. VERY light and effective rigs. 1
Takemetothebank Posted June 19, 2022 Posted June 19, 2022 I’m assuming by bfs you mean big fat small mouth and they eat just about anything lol. But seriously shimano makes a bfs curado that is really nice and it all kind of depends on what techniques you finesse fish with spinning rods are already finesse by trade just look for a 610-7ft medium light I like the Dobyns champ 702sf and a Shimano vanford 2500 if you wanted to go lighter witch to me 10lb braid to a 6 lb leader is as light as I want to go you could look for a 701sf spinning rod and match it with a 1000 vanford for a casting rod a Dobyns champ 702c matched with the curado bfs and boom your in business and have a spinning and casting combo for around 800$ but may I ask why you want to get into bfs gear I own a 2 and 3 power spinning rod and they throw finesse stuff as well as I could ask for

Most are Japanese domestic market (JDM) items, so they need to be ordered from Japanese vendors that ship to the US. I usually just use the vendor that has my target items in stock so I can't opine on which vendors are cheapest or most reputable - though I haven't had any issues to date (knock on wood). Some others here buy JDM stuff more frequently than I, so I'll let them chime in.
ghost Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 Shimano Curado BFS casting reel and Phenix Feather 7'1" Light casting rod. You can check both out on Tacklewarehouse. Or if you want to go cheaper o. The reel, the Kastking Zephyr. 2
WC53 Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 Lure at fish weights matter I would love a good 4 power with a soft tip. The Curado bfs is awesome for the money. Zillion tw with a spare bfs spool is very nice
Super User FishTank Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 I just got into it myself, less than a month ago. It's been a blast so far. I am currently using a 22 Shimano Aldebaran BFS and a Dobyn's Sierra Ultra Finesse. Both have been great but I have come to the conclusion that backlashes are just part of it and easy side arm casts work better than over head casts. Distance is dictated by the wind and my thumb. It is a totally different fishing experience than spinning gear and regular baitcasters so there is a bit of learning curve. Once I got casting down and what baits to use, I have caught over 100 fish with it but nothing over 3lbs. That 3lber felt like a gaint though. These guys have been killing any of the baits I have used. 2
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 The term "BFS" refers to casting gear only. What's your budget? There are several ways you can go at different price points. You can use a bfs specific reel or use a drop in spool for non bfs reels. The rod may be more important than the reel though. Without the proper rod your reel won't make much difference.
Super User bulldog1935 Posted June 20, 2022 Super User Posted June 20, 2022 Spinning reel - do not pass go, but go to JDM and buy a reel with shallow braid-specific spool. E.g., Vanquish C2000S, or any Stradic to Stella in C2000S. Again JDM, Daiwa Alphas Air is on sale all over Japan, in anticipation of Zillion Silver Wolf release this summer. Or watch intently and snag the Silver Wolf. I'm anything but a fanboy, but Daiwa casting brake has this pegged. 3

redmeansdistortion Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 What combo did you have before? If you had one of the Chinese reels, they tend to take a bit of effort dialing them in before they get to throwing consistently. If you want to buy something new, the exchange rate between the yen and dollar is outstanding at the moment. You can spend a lot less money at this point in time. The reels I feel are worth looking at right now are the Alphas Air TW, Gekkabijin Air TW PE, Millionaire CT SV, Calcutta Conquest BFS, and '22 Aldebaran BFS. If you're on a budget, the SLX BFS is currently running ~$150, and it's almost the same reel as the Curado BFS outside of the color scheme and a few other minor details. For a little background on the exchange rate, a year ago I paid $400 for my Calcutta Conquest BFS, right now you can get it for ~$330 or so. The Millionaire CT SV also runs in that price range. 2
newapti5 Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 I'd add some of Daiwa's BFS reels to the list. The new Alphas Air is a good choice. And if you want an upgrade to that, Daiwa's Gekka Bijin Air TW PE Special is even smoother, tailored for braid lines, except that stupid name translation that butchers the original Japanese name 月下美人, which means "beauty under the moon," the Japanese name for the flower Epiphyllum.

Jeffrey Walker Posted June 20, 2022 Author Posted June 20, 2022 i had a Tsurinoya reel awful is the pop-x from megabass considered bfs?

Just picked up a JDM Shimano Poison Adrena 163ML for about $100 less than I paid for my BFS version of that rod. The former is also BFS capable but has a bit more backbone. Paired with a Daiwa 20 Steez AIR TW 500XXH, the rig weighs in right at 8.0 oz.

Jeffrey Walker Posted June 21, 2022 Author Posted June 21, 2022 I have the P5 PopX stick. Is that BFS? Is 2000 the right size, I prefer the smallest package but have to keep in mind what rod its going on. I am lookng at the Megabass baby plugging rod, is this a good pairing or should I be looking at a 500 sized reel.
