New Curado

Looking at getting a new Curado. Right now I use the Curado 200e7. The green beast. That’s what my son calls it. He wants to get me a new reel. I think he just wants my green beast. Anyways wanting to know what new version would be a good replacement. It will be a do it all reel. I didn’t realize there where so many models nowadays. Thanks for the help. Michael.

I have a DC, MGL, and a K. You can't go wrong with any of those.

I haven't had my 150 MGL long enough to comment on durability but overall I am impressed. I love and still use my E series & Scorpion XT. I also have my K's, 70 and newer Scorpion (K platform). In my opinion the 150 is the perfect combination of size, weight and power.

I'd keep the E, the VBS is way better than the SVS on the K. The K is a great reel once you dial it in but its not a set and forget like the older ones. I still use all of the E models Chronarch, Curado, and Citica.

I have two k’s, a dc and a 150 mgl. The k is a nice work horse reel, for your jig rod or other heavier applications. Although it will throw down to a 3-0 hook and a weightless rage craw. Now with the 150 mgl out, it will do all that and handle lighter baits much better. The DC really shines on a moving bait rod. Mine found it’s home on my spinner bait, swim jig, buzz baits and things of that nature ( less aerodynamic stuff). It will bomb cranks 3/8’s and up also. It’s great for that but I don’t see the need to buy another one. 
The mgl will be what I put on any new rods for the time being. Good luck, and whatever you pick will be fine really.

How about the SLX-DC. Anybody with experience with that one compared to my E7. Was looking at videos on it but didn’t know if it would be a step down instead of an upgrade. I like the concept of the DC but thinking about trying it out on the SLX vs the Curado. The more I look on the web the more I change my mind. Thanks again. Michael

I think your thinking is spot on.  Your son wants that green beast. 

 

Couldn't tell you which model would be the best for you.  I do know my Scorpion MGL was harder to dial in than any of my older Shimano reels (Curado, Chronarch, Scorpion).

 

I believe the Scorpion is the Japanese version of the Curado.  The 19 model can be found for less than the Curado and AFAIC is a better looking reel.  Others will have to tell you any difference (other than color) between the two reels.  I know sometimes the JDM reels have shorter handles than the US versions, but couldn't tell you which reels this applies to.

I'm another in favor of getting a mgl (70 or 150) spooled reel and not giving him the green beast.  Inheritance is earned!

how does the infinity SVS compare to the first generation of SVS (on the curado i)? I have the curado 200i and it is set it and forget it (dial at 3, brakes 2 on and I never touch them - just use the cast control for changing lures).

 

I have always wondered if the K and the new MGL were better than the I version because of the newer brakes (the ones on the I are red, I think the newer brakes on the K and MGL are clear??)

 

that being said the curado I casts a long way

All mine are the  half on half off. Never touch them. All six of my shimano reels for that matter.

I say keep the green beast and add another one to share with the kid or maybe a Citica E.

Same system as the K basically, the brakes on the K snap into the spool instead of sliding to the side to turn off. My VBS reels anything over a 1/4 i run 5 off one on and use the spool tension. Any bait a 1/4 or less 2 brakes on 4 off, set and forget hardly ever have to play with the tension. The SVS pains me because I want to make one adjustment and be done, it's why I switched to the lews with the ACS system which is an externally adjustable centrifugal system that does great for me. The SVS takes more for me than a simple click of the dial which if all I had to do was swing the cover open and pull or push a brake collar like the older VBS I would still fish nothing but Shimano.

Avoid the K, the pinnacle of Shimano's ever lessening build quality on their reels. Yet I recognize the brand made sort of an effort after the pathetic ''metanium buzz''.

Funny you say this.  The K reputation is stellar, I'm pretty sure.  That said, out of probably 50 Shimanos between my son and I, it's the only one that has blown up.   After 2 trips to their recommended service center, we had to send it to Shimano.   They fixed it recently,  so we shall see.

More baseless hype than  anything else. Low-quality springs in the spool disengaging system (prone to metal fatigue), low-quality ''stainless'' steel parts... The reputation here on Brazil is very low.

thats kind of what i was asking because the Curado I has the first generation SVS and I never make adjustments to either the dial or the brakes, just the cast control knob. 

 

that being said I dont throw lighter stuff either though. maybe if I went down to 1/4oz I might have to. right now I use my spinning gear for 1/4 and under

Just a follow up to my post. After a recent trip to Bass Pro the truth comes out. My son wants my reel bad. I decided to keep it and just buy him his own. Looking at spending around $150.00. He really liked the Lews Tournament Pro MP. I will admit it was super smooth. And I liked the fact it had 2 braking controls. Just looking at opinions on this reel. He also liked the Lews KVD. But I think just because he liked the red. Thanks again for your input. And yes I will give him my “Green Beast” in a couple years when he turns 21. Just not ready for a new reel. If it aren’t broke don’t fix it. ??

Set the budget at $150 and let your son pick the reel he wants.

The Shimano SLX MGL 70 is a nice reel within the budget.
