Buzzbaiter Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 I’m in the market for a budget spinning rod and I’m torn between three different models: -Daiwa Tatula XT -Daiwa Fuego -Dobyns Fury -Shimano Sellus. I’m doing a lot of hiking and creek fishing, so durability is a consideration. I’m going to use this rod as an all-purpose spinning setup for everything from Ned rigs to small walking baits, if that matters. Any thoughts? Quote
PaulVE64 Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 Yes I would recommend a Medium or Medium Light rod between 5-10" and 6'-3" long. I prefer a fast tip rather than an extra fast. And if you find it let me know. I want one too. Quote
newapti5 Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 If durability is your priority, then IMO Fury is the one, or a used Sierra. Quote

I know I am getting old, but that looks like four different models. I have zero experience with any of those models...so no help from me. I have an older Fuego, but have never used it. Prefer baitcasting. You couldn't have given me a Sellus when they were white. I could live with the current blue. And they have a 6' MF with a 3/16-5/8 oz. lure rating. I've never fished a Fenwick Eagle, but have handled them in store and thought they felt like a nice rod for the $$$. There is a 6' Medum-ModFast in one and 2-piece options rated for 1/8-3/4 oz. lures. 1 Quote

I currently have a 6'10" ML casting rod when I thought I was ordering the spinning rod model. I hope you realize I was just yanking your chain. 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted June 18, 2022 Super User Posted June 18, 2022 I have a Fenwick HMX MF and a Daiwa Procyon MXF. Both are sub-$100.00 rods. I like them both equally well. If I had to pick one, it would likely be the Fenwick. I love the grip and the fit and finish is very nice for that price. It’s a great wacky rig rod and also with weightless Texas rigs. Quote
haggard Posted June 18, 2022 Posted June 18, 2022 Technically speaking it's about $5 higher than your specified "sub $100" but if you're looking for quality, versatility, flexibility and ~$100, consider the St. Croix Triumph series TSR60MF (6'0, medium power, fast action). St.C website erroneously calls this "TRS60MF" in some places. Disclaimer - I'm a St.C fan. I bought a couple of these as backup/loaner rods but have to say I'm really impressed with the quality and if it was my only rod I wouldn't be disappointed. Quote
Mbirdsley Posted June 18, 2022 Posted June 18, 2022 I have a dobyns colt. For the money it is a very good rod. Mine is a m/l 7fter I’ve had it 4 summers now. I use it for wacky, rigs, tubes, jerk baits, and shad raps. The m/l is a little on the heavy side. I’ve got plenty of back home when I wack a bass on a wacky rig. i like the st.croix rods starting with the premier on up in the price point catagory. For the sub $130 price point I think dobyns are better. Quote
ironbjorn Posted June 18, 2022 Posted June 18, 2022 Get the Dobyns Fury 663SF. It's a great all around spinning rod. The little extra you're paying is worth it because you get a lifetime warranty. If durability is truly a concern this is your rod. Under $100 and you have to seriously lower your expectations. If it must be under $100, get a 6'6" M/F Daiwa Aird-X for $50 and replace it as needed (it's also a very good rod - think "the Black Max" of rods). Quote
