Cbump Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I have gotten so carried away (for me) with the amount of rods I have, that in my latest tournament it was like a puzzle game in my head trying to figure out and revenge what I wanted to throw on on what rod. Or I try to have one of every thing tied on and I’ll have 17 rods on deck. I need an intervention and want to go mostly Dobyns (I’ll keep my crank bait and jerk bait setups). The majority of the baits I throw are these (besides cranks and jerkbaits): Drop shot Ned rig Weightless Fluke Weightless senko Spinnerbait Chatterbait (probably more than anything) Swim jig T-rig (3/16 - 1 oz) (creature and big worms) Dirty jig finesse jigs Small swimbaits (underspins, jig heads, 3-4” Keitech types) That’s really about It for the most part. As you’ll see I have rods for all kinds of other things. This is what I currently own. I keep a list. Super User ChrisD46 Posted June 16, 2022 Super User Posted June 16, 2022 Here are my Dobyns rods (Sierra Series) : Casting : 733C, 734C , 735C Spinning : 702S , 703S I use the above casting rods with different reels loaded either with straight FC , Mono or with Braid + FC leaders. For spinning I only use Braid + FC leaders . *The Sierra series have a slightly slower tip and fast rating (not XF) which I prefer because I can dial in the performance I need by changing from braid to FC or mono lines. When I bought the Sierra's - the Kaden series were not released yet . If I were going to do it again the 734C & 735C would probably be in the Kaden series for jigs and bottom contact baits . If you have more money to spend , the Champion series would be a no - brainer . I don't throw crankbaits much but if I did , one of the "CB" designated rods from the Fury on up would be in my collection . *Regardless of the series , the Dobyns rods all have a similar balance point and feel in the hand and are all spined properly before guides & reel seats are added . They just use better blanks and components as you go up to the higher cost series rods. Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 16, 2022 Super User Posted June 16, 2022 From what you listed the Dobyns rods to use are; Spinning, SA702SF, SA703SF or KD712F. Casting, SA704C, SA734. I would start with the above, couple with your reels you prefer to use. After your try out add more of the same and contact Dobyns for any questions you have. I prefer you use all Daiwa reels if possible. Tom 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted June 17, 2022 Super User Posted June 17, 2022 Whatever you do, get a Sierra 734. I have the micro guides version (there's also regular size guides). Straight 40# braid fishing a Super Fluke/Caffeine Shad/Flush= ? 1 Quote
Cbump Posted June 17, 2022 Author Posted June 17, 2022 Would 734 be good for smaller swimbaits 1/2 to 1 oz? Could It t-rig also? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 17, 2022 Super User Posted June 17, 2022 A 4-power Dobyns is a little light for a 1oz swimbait...yes it's in the posted range, but at the top. I personally use a 5-power for anything 7/8oz and more total weight. A 734 is a great rod for T-Rigs...any bottom contact actually...but watch the total weight again. 1 Quote

NathanDLTH Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 Do what I did, start with the basic baits you love then go from there. For me, it was: Jigs, spinnerbait, chatterbait, swim jig, frog, drop shot/ned, shaky head/tube. Basically what needs to happen is highlight these baits and techniques then build an arsenal for those techniques. I'd recommend spending money on the stuff you love to throw. I went mostly high end in gear, simply because I had the budget to afford it and I do not recommend doing that. Stay within your budget or the price point you have set for yourself. I've spent way to much money on gear only to sell it off before truly understanding what it was capable of and how to utilize the rod/reel to it's potential. Quote
Cbump Posted June 17, 2022 Author Posted June 17, 2022 Sorry for the late reply. The forum told me I reached my max limit of posts yesterday? I only had like 10. Is there a way to fix this? WRB the rod is more what I meant. Love that reel! Plus I spent a dang fortune on It. Lol I looked at the Kaden series but didn’t appear there is a 734 in It. WRB, what techniques would you use for each of the rods you listed? Quote

I believe you because experience trumps all, but I wonder why Dobyns lists the 683 as a t-rig rod, 734 as jig rod, and 735 goes all the way into the pitch/flip category? FYI, if I’m casting Texas rigs, which I don’t do super often, I’m using max 1/2oz tungsten or less. More often than not I’m pitching with my Sierra 765c. Quote

SA734C is good for T-rigs to 3/8 oz bullet weights and soft plastics. Small swimbaits to 3/8 oz weight oz is OK, 1/2 is pushing it. Your FR795SB works good from 3/4oz to 2 oz swimbaits. Tom Quote

A 1/4 oz - 1 oz rod for example will perform best with a total weight of 1/2 oz. Add in the hook and plastic bait and you're not at 3/8 oz anymore. Maxing out a rod just because it says you can doesn't mean you should. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 17, 2022 Super User Posted June 17, 2022 I know you said dobyns but you have a lot of falcon rods in the mix. Have you considered consolidating on falcon? You note 10 ‘things’ to have rods for (presumably rigged on deck) and already have 6 falcons perfectly right for 6 of them. A couple targeted additions and you’re there. Quote

Add the hook, and soft plastic is about 1/4oz= 5/8 oz lure weight with a heavy wire hook. The rod can easy cast 1 oz but hook setting is your goal with a T-rig, moving the hook in mouth full of soft plastic requires added power. SA735C if using 1/2 bullet weight + 7 to 9 inch worm or thick body creatures to get a good hook set. Your questions should directed to Dobyns, they know their rods and will give you honest answers.
