I can cut you down to one. Ned rig with a tickler or worm.

That's a tricky one here.  All of our lakes around are grassed up at this point.  Any ned needs to be weedless to slide through the grass.  I have some weedless options now this year, and if the spinning rod comes in the boat there is already one rigged.

My favorite soft plastic for veggies is a weightless t-rig.

1/2oz 8/0 Fin-tech head - 8" Hags Tornado Storm Chaser

1/4oz 3/0 Fin-tech head - 6" Netbait T-mac Okeechobee Craw

3/4oz brass worm weight / crystal flash bead Carolina rig - 5" zoom super fluke bluegill flash

1/2oz gamakatsu hybrid swing head - rage bug PB&J

1/8oz 6/0 gambler duz it - 6.5" spunk shad GP magic or gambler burner worm gold rush

1/8oz 3/0 keitech ball head - zman fatty worm (cut down) GP

This handled most of my May, gonna need to get a flippin rig going soon.  The weeds came in fast and heavy this year with the early ice out and now the weekend traffic has cut up enough for some mats to form.

Drop shot 3-4" worm

Shaky head 5-6" worm

Ned rigged trd

Jika rigged beaver/creature

Keitech 2.8-5.8

This is very close to my actual starting lineup for me these days as I've been gradually drifting away from hardbaits. Sometimes a wacky, flick shake,  or neko will replace one or more of the above.

If you want to learn to drive screws leave your hammer at home! ?

lol reminded me I saw a guy at work trying to pound screws in with a hammer….I told him to twist his wrist to the right on impact.

Well I made it out tonight for the annual all plastics outing. I probably didn’t pick a good night for it. The wind was 10-15 mph most of the time which meant anything light and slow was practically impossible to fish. I went to the same lake that I did last year, though with quite a few more trips there since. This lake is 50 acres and fishes like a big pond more than anything. It goes to 30’ and has big muskies in it, but it’s very weedy (pondweed, milfoil, eelgrass).  There is some overhanging brush with <2’ of water under it that also holds fish. For the most part, the grass and the variations in the grass re what hold fish.

tonight, I figured the bluegill would be on beds (they were) which means the bass are usually close by (they were). This is a good swim jig lake so my first port of call was a ‘swim jig’, aka a Texas rigged keitech with a skirted punch weight in front of it. It was also one of the things that you could work in the wind. I put a little time in with a sluggo, a couple different Texas rigged plastics, a toad and a frog.  I made a few casts with an unweighted yum dinger to fish that swirled or that I saw before they saw me. The fish were short striking a lot tonight. A couple times on the swim jig they slammed it, but didn’t get the hook.  I landed two on the swim jig but had another half dozen that would have been in the boat on another day.

i also threw a buzz bait a little bit. Yes that’s against the rules. I wanted to try them on two different rods for an evening session before I loaded them up for a 3am session soon. I landed one on a buzz bait and had a couple more hit it but still miss the hooks. Talking to two guys at the ramp, they said this lake has been fishing poorly the past two weeks. I think we need just a bit more heat to get the fish into their summer patterns.

i also had a nice musky swirl on the swim jig right at the boat. It flared its mouth like it was going to inhale it but didn’t. That would have been a nice bycatch.

I fish plastics mostly, they work the best with the waters I fish. It’s hard to fish with any baits that feature treble hooks or are heavy baits, like jigs. The grass and algae are too prolific . I can fish spinnerbaits , but they are limited too.

My “ circle of trust “ baits:

A weightless super fluke fished with a 3/0 Gamakatsu hook.

5 inch  Weightless Yum dingers  or senkos with the same hook. For smaller size dingers I go down to a 2/0 hook.

7.5 inch culprit worm with a 2/0 or 3/0 straight shank worm hook. I use a small split shot weight with these to help with casting and keeping it under water with a slow retrieve.

UV speed worms- same rig as the culprit

Speed craws- with these I’ll use a 1/0 or 2/0 wide gap , and the split shot.

Baby brush hogs- same rig as the speed craw.

This isnt all I carry, but I probably catch 80% or more of all my fish on these baits…

I will upsize the hooks and weight depending on the situation…
