Takemetothebank Posted June 15, 2022 Posted June 15, 2022 Hi guys so I wanted to speak on a combo I bought a couple months ago and have been extremely impressed with. I believe when you step into the 100$ price point for rods and reels your in a middle ground where your just breaking the surface of high level gear for me my high end rods sit at about 400$ a combo / Dobyns champ and curados or concept a2s. However I use these mainly for bottom contact rods, jigs trig shakeyheads and that’s about it so I bought a cheaper combo for my flashy swimmers and 3/8 oz chatterbaits about a year ago and have been very impressed with it. I ended up with a Dobyns fury 733c and a 13 fishing inception 6:1 and while the fury isint the most sensitive rod in the world it’s extremely well balanced I can even fish some flukes on it pretty effectively. These cheaper rods however and especially Dobyns in particular have much more slowed down blanks and this in turn makes them less sensitive. However this makes them killer for moving baits such as chatterbaits, underspins, light wire swim jigs, and the lure everyone else catches monsters on but me the infamous spinnerbait. I love my fury for these applications, and am glad i Picked it up. Not to mention the Dobyns warranty. the inception is just a solid reel I’ve had it for about 4 seasons and it has hopped around from rod to rod and been used hard. While it’s not the best performance reel it is a solid choice for those not looking to break the bank smooth drag solid construction and has been beat to tarnation by yours truly and still performs like new “knock on wood”. So this is my favorite combo around 200$ What are yours. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 15, 2022 Super User Posted June 15, 2022 I got two at the $200 retail level that I like Fuego CT-H/Fury 705CB - wonderful crank rig for the price Supreme/Fury 703C - this is my prime jerkbait rig, but also used for weighted wacky/shakey and other topwaters like a WP One I only paid $200 for - cause I got the reel used Patriarch/Fury 704C - this is my bottom contact/Jig rig - T-Rigs, Football, Swim, etc...I keep my eye on the used market cause the Patriarchs are wonderful reels IME. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 15, 2022 Super User Posted June 15, 2022 Fuego/Bucco $200 SLX/SLX $129.99 Black Max/ Aird-X $100 If you are having issues catching bass with any of the above, it's not because of any of the above... Quote

I have a few of the XT version but have used more than a couple of base SLX. Enough to say that it should be considered at the price point. Quote

This time last year you could get the Abu SX Revo for $120 and the Bucoo for $89 (and I did both twice). For $210 that's hard to beat. I haven't seen those prices in a while though. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted June 15, 2022 Super User Posted June 15, 2022 SLX/SLX combos are hard to beat. 2 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted June 15, 2022 Super User Posted June 15, 2022 Ark Lancer Pro or Cobb series and a Lew's LFS. The rod gives up nothing to a champ in the sensitivity dept., if anything it's more sensitive, and the reel is a smooth, and durable. Very tough combo to beat in it's price range. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 15, 2022 Global Moderator Posted June 15, 2022 I have 2 Ark Lancer Pro’s, at 100.00 each but don’t own a reel in that price range. Mike Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 15, 2022 Super User Posted June 15, 2022 Im going to cheat here cause full msrp retail wise wont make the cut. I got lucky bought Curado 50E new on sale for $99 and pair that with Quantum Smoke rod also on sale for $99. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 16, 2022 Super User Posted June 16, 2022 I have a lot of rods and reels that I could put together for less than $200. I like them all. I don't mind used. Love closeouts. Curado 51E new $98. Pinnacle Primmus $104.10 new. Used older blue Patriarch XT $65 (what a find!). Older gray Cabela's Prodigy $60 on closeout is surprisingly good although I guess it shouldn't have been a surprise since it is a Daiwa. I could add a bunch more reels that cost me $100 or less. One was $30 on closeout. ? Rods $100 or less. My OG Tatulas, Elite Tech Smallmouths, Quantum Tour Editions and a Superlite, plus a few others. Really like my Hurricane Redbone 7' ML and Shimano 7' MF Compre each $75 new. The Smallmouth and Quantum rods were all less than $80 new. I believe the 2 Tour Editions were less than $50 apiece on closeout (think $200 MSRP). Stick some of those rods with reels that cost me $125 and I'd have even more choices. A used 7' MHF Rainshadow RX7 is a fantastic rod at the $100 I paid. Excellent sensitivity. Love this rod. I was given a TD-X 103H and 103HVA and a TD-Z US Trail with a Steez 103 spool. Cosmetically not much to look at, but they were gone through by a gentleman that enjoys playing around with reels and they are a pleasure to cast. These 3 could be combined with any rod I have and still be under $200 as the most I've ever paid for a rod was $185 for a used custom. Now if I only had the time to fish them. QUAKEnSHAKE, as you can see I ignored MSRP as well. I've only paid MSRP once (when I first got into baitcast reels) and that was for a $60 Field & Stream Tech Spec 6'9" MF at DSG. 2 Quote

I have played with one and they are nice personally I would look around for an older model curado I bet you could find one for around 100$ I have a k and love it I also have an old e that is really nice as well Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted June 16, 2022 Super User Posted June 16, 2022 Fuego CT/Powell Diesel 734C HF SLX MGL/Daiwa Aird-X 7'3" MH. My brother loves this combo. One night he needed to reposition himself by kneeling up to take a whizz over the side of our jon boat, and didn't realize he'd sent this combo to the depths until we were back at the ramp. I needed to lean hard in the opposite direction with all my weight to keep this giant goofball from flipping us over, so I also missed it dropping in. He had a new one by midweek. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted June 16, 2022 Super User Posted June 16, 2022 When Dobyns had the roll out promo on the Kadens, one model I grabbed was a 713 SF and it’s paired with a Procyon LT 3000 I picked up on a close out for 99 bucks. Best combo for the cost I have to date. Quote
Yuddzy Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I'd vote for a Fenwick HMX 7' MH/F rod ($80) paired with a Daiwa Fuego CT ($100) Spend the last twenty dollars on a pack of Yum Dingers, Bullet Sinkers, and EWG hooks to break it all in. 1 Quote

I’ve only ever owned fury’s and champs and while I love my fury my champions are an amazing rod and you can’t beat that warranty 1 Quote
