Creek Fishing Reel

Hello everyone.

 

I exclusively Kayak fish in creeks and rivers. I've had a heck of a time finding reels that will last very long (Daiwa Legalis, Lews Speed Spin). I've had the best luck with Shimano Sedona for far.

 

I've noticed the Daiwa Fuego has "Magseal". Would that be a good option for me? Hopefully that would reduce the chances of sand/silt/etc getting in the gears. Do any other brands have a similar offering with "sealed" internals?

 

Or do you you have any other suggestions?

To get something that it completely sealed is going to cost a pretty penny and it is no guarantee that it will be totally clean internally. I too fish from a kayak and I like spinning gear for certain things but if you are constantly getting your reels dirty and dunked I would go with casting gear and clean it after each use. Also depending on how dirty the water is and which line you use, braid can be an issue on most reels, even the good ones. 

 

Another suggestion,  learn how to not get your reels in the water. It know it's a tough thing but it is possible.  Watch a pro kayak bass fisherman land a fish and you will get the idea.

Kayak fishing in the salt, even for the surf, I use unsheilded spool bearings. 

They must be oiled again with hard use, but that also flushes them without a big bearing effort. 

You may be over-thinking the need for seals.  Aside from that, Daiwa magseal bearings are quite good.

Honestly, I use both casting and spinning gear and don't see a reason to get anything special for the situation. Avoid dunking your reels or laying them in sand and fine gravel. You'll be fine. I've used everything from old Sedona FB to Stradic FL and Kastking Sharky II to President XT (current) and Metanium DC to Kastking Stealth. My current casting reels are Kastkings from the Megajaws to the Megajaws Elite (fantastic reels btw). I've had one reel get sand in it, a JDM SLX MGL and it was quickly cleaned out. Just be careful and have fun.
