Super User Darth-Baiter Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 The hydration thread had me curious. Yesterday I skipped coffee. Just drank some water, tiny bit of juice. Went on my merry way. 1st, bass fishing is fairly exhilarating alone. That first tap on my bait, and I’m 100% awake. Admittedly, the longish drive to the kayak launch could have used a caffeine jolt, but I lived. I think I drink coffee out of habit. I do like the taste and morning ritual. However, It was easier to stay hydrated without the early morning coffee. Less standing up to pee overboard. I won’t quit coffee anytime soon. Maybe when they stop doing work meetings or make chocolate chip cookies disappear:). it’s not the end of the world if I don’t have time to brew a cup. Sometimes I just gotta get going cuz I woke up late. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink coffee within minutes of getting out of bed and continue throughout the days and if it is hot on the boat I have iced coffee. When fishing I also have a bottle of water going and yes, I p*ss like a race horse. Nobody like me if I ain't sweating caffeine ? 6 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I never drank a cup of coffee until I retired over 2 years ago. The brewing aroma is nice in the morning but definitely not an addiction. If I remember, I'll have coffee before before I go fishing in the morning. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink a lot of coffee. If it's a tourney day, I do not partake. 2 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink two things, water & coffee. I drink 40 - 60 oz of coffee a day and six to eight 16.9 oz bottles of water daily. Since I've started drinking coffee, being the diuretic it is, the 2 - 4 kidney stones I pass every year have been smaller, so I'm not changing a thing. 2 Quote

I go through a whole 12-cup pot every day...then maybe a couple cups of tea. Tea is an even better diuretic. I'm 62-1/2 now and never had a kidney stone in my life. 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink a 16-20 oz bottle of electrolytes (sugar free Gatorade, Propel, etc) as soon as I get up in the morning I'm fishing. Then I'm already one step ahead on the hydration game. Next I have a cup of coffee and something to eat. Moments later, the deuce is done for the day and I'm ready to get on the water! I continue to drink another 80 ounces of electrolytes: Smart water, Lifewatr, etc. throughout the day... limiting the caffeine intake to 1 beverage seems to work. Other guys I fish with don't do this so I buy them Dude Wipes (and even some repeat offenders a hat) for their birthday every year because inevitably they have to make a pit stop or do a #2 off the back of my boat mid day ? 1 1 Quote
813basstard Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 I still drink out of the hose. The first 8 seconds or so it’s hot as hell. After that, bliss. 3 1 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted June 13, 2022 BassResource.com Administrator Posted June 13, 2022 After I painfully passed a kidney stone (and have internal scars to deal with for the rest of my life), I learned my "hydration" choices of several cups of coffee, coke, and gatoraide combined with daily spinach salads were the reasons why it happened. Now, I don't drink any sports drinks, have 1 cup of coffee per day, rarely have a coke, and drink plenty of water. In fact, first thing in the morning I guzzle a full glass of water, without fail. And drink water before I go to bed. And drink plenty of water throughout the day. Sometimes the free stuff is the best for you. 7 Quote
VolFan Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 Water, water, everywhere and all the boards do shrink… I am the worst as far as drinking coffee, but a big glass of water 1rst thing in the AM will save you significant pain later. Continuing with large glasses of water through the day will then significantly reduce your medical bills and reliance on pain meds. Stones are no joke. If you know you know. 1 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 My solution to heat is more water. I carry a gallon of water in the kayak and yes, I will also drink a good bit of coffee. We’ve got some very very hot days incoming and it is possible that I will carry more than a gallon of water as well as not drink as much coffee and get off the water when it really starts to boil. But, in most cases, if I have a gallon of water, dehydration is not possible for me. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink I cup of coffee every morning after drinking a glass of water. That’s the morning ritual 5 days a week. The exception to this is if we have a work meeting. I will have another cup of coffee ( black , of course ), in that case. Even on all night security detail friday night, I only drink 2 cups of coffee. I’ll drink 2-3 on sunday at church. (Coffee is everywhere.) ? I drink lots of water otherwise, and the occasional sweet tea. Almost never drink carbonated drinks anymore. Just the occasional coke zero. I have no trouble peeing…? 1 Quote
Krux5506 Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 I couldn't do much without coffee until pretty recently. Haven't had any in a few months now, because I had to lay off due to some gut issues. It was one of a few things my Dr told me to cut out only for a couple weeks but I liked how I felt so I've kept it going. I do drink tea now instead, usually black or yerba mate so definitely still getting caffeine. I will say I made one cup of coffee a month or so ago, took a few sips and it tasted awful to me. I guess I lost my taste buds for it, so I'll stick with tea. It's definitely nice getting up in the morning and not needing coffee to get going. Even if I skip the tea for the day, the withdrawal is no where near what it used to be. Quote
SC53 Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 Large glass of water when I get up and then my cup and half of coffee. Things get moving quick. That’s it for coffee for the day but continue to drink water all day. I don’t do soft drinks unless I’m mixing some ginger ale with Crown on occasion? 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 It's funny that a lot of people drink coffee in the morning to "wake-up" when you don't really need it. Your body produces the hormone cortisol which is your "fight or flight" response to stress. It's at it's highest in the morning to help wake you up and lowest at night. For me, I have 2 cups in the morning and 1 cup around 2 pm before I hit the wall. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 I used to hammer coke/pepsi and anything caffeinated growing up. Noticed the highs and lows, and caffeine cravings...so I switched to caffeine-free soda. After about 3 months, I quit soda all together. Never liked the smell of coffee, and have had exactly one coffee in my entire life...an exchange student got me an iced coffee as a "thank you," so I choked it down, a smile on my face. I drink a ton of water throughout the day. Quote
Super User gim Posted June 13, 2022 Super User Posted June 13, 2022 I drink coffee every morning, 365 days/year. I prefer french roast because its has more bite to it. Straight black. My Mother always has and still does drink coffee like a fish. She makes it and drinks it all day long. So growing up, it was just always available. When I first tried it, I thought it tasted awful. Same with beer. After a while though, it grew on me. Since about high school, its just a daily ritual. I don't drink it all day long. Once lunch rolls around, I've stopped drinking it. I stayed at my aunt and uncles house once years ago for a few days. By the second day there, I started to get massive headaches about mid-morning. I later found out that my aunt was making decaf coffee. The lack of caffeine cold turkey is what caused those headaches. I primarily use a 40 ounce yeti cup for my coffee (and fill it 3/4 of the way full). When I deer or turkey hunt, I fill a thermos of it for the day to take with me. 1 Quote
dickenscpa Posted June 20, 2022 Posted June 20, 2022 All I drink is coffee and water. I drink my coffee black and mostly decaf. I used to drink 3 pots a day but after my heart attack and switching to decaf maybe a pot and a half. Basically all my water comes from the spout in my refridgerator door. I keep that cannister thing replaced when I should that filters. I may do some of my water with Soda Stream and use one of their non sweetened 0 cal fruit flavors some. I like pink grapefruit. I used to have kidney stones BAD from 2000-2008. but I drank 0 water a bunch of black coffee and all Dr Pepper and Coke. Gave up sodas and the kidney stones left. I've got a 32oz Yeti and the door prize at one fishing tourney was that lid and built in coffee cup. So I put that on the Yeti and when I fish a tourney like this past weekend I make a full thing of coffee and drink it all day. This past Saturday was on the water at 4:00 lines in 4:30 and lines out at 2:30. No WAY I was doing that without coffee! LOL! I also had 60oz of water on board. Quote
Gera Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Diet coke and cigarettes, the breakfast of the champs. 1 2 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 30, 2022 Super User Posted June 30, 2022 Now that it is warmer I drink cold brew every morning pretty much unless I don't feel like it. Fishing days, yup still drink it and water and gatorade throughout the day. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 30, 2022 Super User Posted June 30, 2022 I use to drink 4 or 5 cups of coffee every day at work. Now I have a cup of coffee before I leave on the fishing trip. The rest of the time it's water. Quote
BustedSwimbait Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 I will drink coffee everyday, but the days I'm going fishing. Coffee can do odd things to my body. I can't have the possibility of having to drop a deuce while paddling. Beer on the other hand, as soon as I hit the water! 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted July 5, 2022 Super User Posted July 5, 2022 My summertime routine when the anticipated temperature is going to be between 75 and 90. If lower than 75 I drink less water and if above 90 I drink more. I rise and shine at least 45 minutes before I have to leave. I go start the coffee and pack my lunch. During this process, my body knows I need to “evacuate” before I leave and I rarely have a problem. Note, I have never had to go to shore in all of my years of guiding and fishing. My average drive to the bodies of water I fish is an hour. I pour myself a travel 4 cup insulated coffee and a 32oz yeti with water. By the time I get to the lake/river I have drank both of them. I go to the porta John or the woods to pee before getting on the boat. I take 4 or 5 bottles of water with me. I used to take half waters and half propel, gatoraide or some other sports drink but I was really starting to swell up on my hands and ankles after I got home so I went 100% water. It’s also rare that I have to pee while on the boat but I do immediately after we get back to the dock. I then drink another water on the way home. That’s my routine. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 6, 2022 Global Moderator Posted July 6, 2022 Previously, I didn’t drink coffee. Then I didn’t drink it when it was hot outside. Now I drink one cup first thing everyday……….. this could be a slippery slope im sensitive to it tho, I made a travel mug too strong once and I was fishing like a crazed maniac. I had to go back inside and relax and drink water for a while then go back out Quote
