Super User gim Posted June 10, 2022 Super User Posted June 10, 2022 This is the first season I'm using a Berkley Maxscent product. I've got several packages of tubes I'll be using. My question is, can I leave the tube on my jighead/hook? I like to get some of my rigs ready ahead of time and tying a tube on prior to the trip saves me time. Is it going to lose its palatability if I tied it on prior to using it? Also, should I put it back in the original bag with the other ones after I'm done using it too? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 10, 2022 Super User Posted June 10, 2022 To me, the longer you have the MaxScent baits out of the package, the more the scent goes away. They are softer and don't tend to hold up as well as the Power Baits. The scent on the water, if you are not catching anything, last about 2-3 hours but it does hold onto some of the scent. It just looses the initial potency quickly to me. I have seen guys put an empty bag over a bait and then secure it to the rod with a plastic bait holder. Seems to keep the bait fresher. 1 1 Quote
Tatulatard Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Aren't these basically gulp light? I would think they would dry out if left out of the package. Quote

Nah. They look like they might, but they hold up about like normal plastics. It's just the smell that goes away. Personally, I'd rather leave them on the hook than unhook them. They're pretty soft, so it seems to me like if you unhook them, you're likely to tear them up. You can glue them back, of course. But they still catch fish even without the scent, and if you're worried, just spray some scent onto them. That's my take anyway. So far, I've caught more fish with these after they've lost their scent than when they still had their scent. Not that there's anything wrong with the scent. It's just that I will fish them until I lose them. 1 Quote

I’m not sure how you are rigging your tube but it sounds like you are running the eye through the inside of the tube which means you have to rig the tube before tying onto your line. If you are rigging the night before, it’s probably not going to make a huge difference. You could also rig the jig and put it back in the package and just tie it on when you are ready. I put o-rings on about half of my generals when I first open the package. As far as leaving out for an extended time, they will not dry out but they will get a duller, kind of matte look. It’s really noticeable with some of the colors like Junebug which gets kind of a chalky look. When you put them back in the water, they will brighten back up a little but IME, that slightly greasy texture will never return. Personally, I leave them in the package as much as possible and don’t put them back after extended use. Quote

I would agree. I have never tried Maxscent because the regular Power bait stinks so bad to me I can't even imagine what maxscent smells like. Quote

They smell putrified. You can smell them through a closed bag. 1 Quote

I prefer to tie it he night before, or if I'm fishing in the evening, before I go to save some time. I will give it a try and see how it goes. Quote

Before my outing i put all my soft baits i plan on using including all used ones into an empty worm pack. I then drop in copious amounts of berkley Powerbait scent and smoosh them all around and let them ferment. Quote

The scent is liquid based so your really don't smell much handling the baits. The plastic and liquid in the bag reminds me of gulp. I'm not a fan of the of the soggy plastics. They aren't the best plastisol in terms of action or durability (like gulp) but do catch fish. If there ever was a case to be made for scents on baits then its these. They come dripping with the stuff. 1 Quote
