So I've been using quantum smoke s3 pt and like the reel but it seems kinda noisy. When I give a cast, it makes a loud zinging noise that I can feel vibrate the reel a little bit. I'm assuming that's the brake potentially, but it is much louder than my Lew's or Daiwa reel so wasn't sure if that was weird

Perhaps the bearings are little dry.

A drop of bearing oil might quiet things down . . . .

I use either of these products

I have the Tour S3. It is essentially the same reel. The noise you here I believe is the brakes. The Tour S3 I have makes the same sound.   A little bit of oil on a q-tip applied to where the brakes make contact will quiet it down but too much oil will effect the performance of the braking system.

It looks like the brakes are the infini brake from abu Garcia/doyo. If you lock the orange brakes in place next to the axle and make a cast you’ll know if it’s the brakes or the bearings. A hard cast and multiple pins of breaks ‘on’ will make a plastic rubbing noise, almost like a matchbox car running across the floor. Bearings on the abus are more of a metal on metal squeal that sound like a dremmel tool.

They're not.

Same as above, I have a Tour S3. Oil the conical brass brake ring found in the beetle wing side plate every 4th outing. The blocks will seat eventually and it'll change to a hum over time. This Quantum, like some Lew's models and most Shimanos, has friction brakes. Daiwa does not, so it makes little sound, but all friction brakes do. Anyway, the S3 is a great reel that punches well above its price point.

What's the casting distance on these like on the s3 acs reels?  Looking for a cheap aluminum frame frog bomber and the s3 accurist pt goes for fuego ct money.

I'd never heard that.  Thanks.  I'll try it.   Love my Smokes, but my one Tour S3 is crazy noisy....always said it doesn't bother me.  But....if it stopped doing it, I'd probably be happier

I believe the accurist uses the acs 3 and the smokes and tours use the acs 4. Both will launch a frog. I frog with an Icon with the older 3 series brakes. My smokes have no problem launching a frog either. To the OP my smokes brakes definitely make some noise. Kinda like a no tech DC. ? lol.

Me too. So does my brother, Other than the nomenclature, there's very little difference between 3.0 and 4.0.

I'd skip the Accurist, but not because it's a bad reel, because it's quite good actually. If you don't mind a reel weighing in at Curado K territory of 8oz, then the ICON PT is the one to get for frogs. If you're thinking of absolutely bombing standard 5/8oz frogs and above, you'll be able to do so with this reel in the equation on a typical 7'3' rod. My brother had his on a light swimbait setup for months before I could convince him to try it on his frog stick. He called me giggling once he tried. Couldn't believe the distance and consistency, and the ICON replaced his K for frog duty. On very low brake settings, and with high arc power casts, the ICON is simply less touchy than the K, IMO. You can find new ones on the auction site for low$.

Brass main gear. Double supported pinion and crankshaft. Shielded cir-clip type NB bearings throughout. Good drag. They've been on the shelf for a few years, so lube the crankcase, clutch mech, and and spool bearings. Lube the brake ring on schedule and they'll be fine. I have 2 myself, and at least one is always with me and is always fished. Rock solid after plenty of fish, usually on baits like Magdraft Freestyles with 6/0 Beast hooks, not only frogs.

Loved my smoke s3. I did have to lightly oil the brakes every so often. But it’s good to check over any reel every now and again

How does it stack up diatwncs wise to your catalina tw?  They in the ballpark?

The Catalina doesn't have a heavy braking profile. Not quite as light as a HLC, but not that far off, so with its 36mm free floating spool I can really send certain baits stupid distances. It's a special reel all around, IMO.

With most baits the ICON PT is a very good caster, in line with most good centrifugal reels, but with frogs it's a freak. I'd guess because of its spool weight, specific braking profile and behavior, it just tracks nearly perfectly with a typical frog's weight and how they cut wind. This is how I tried to explain it to my brother when he couldn't understand why his frog just kept going beyond what he was accustomed to. FWIW, my brother is 6'4" with a 80" wingspan, and a gifted athlete. He can cast.

I have the Smoke S3, the Smoke HD, and an Icon.

Oil the brass on the brakes and enjoy.

These reels are under rated and rock. I prefer my Daiwas, but for only unexplainable reasons!
