Takemetothebank Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Bass can arguably be one of the most frustrating aquatic critters to hunt for the only things I would put above them are native trout and musky it can be incredibly frustrating to know there’s fish in the area but pressure changes weather and other factors can make a bite tough. In these conditions I find myself always reaching for my spinning outfit, and it almost always has 1/8th oz shakeyhead on it with either a big bite squirrel tail or a trick worm. this can be an absolutely deadly combo when everyone else is throwing football jigs, Texas rigs, and cranks. While it most definitely is not the flashiest way to fish, it flat out catches them. The shakeyhead and drop shot are deadly techniques that absolutely catch big bass and I think you would be surprised at the size of fish you can catch on a 6” fitness worm. I most certainly have. So next time it’s hot and you can’t buy a bite brush the cobwebs off your spinning outfit and try a shakeyhead the results will suprise you 8 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 8, 2022 Super User Posted June 8, 2022 Shakey, Wacky, whatever My boat arsenal has 6 casting, 4 spinning My shore arsenal has 1 casting, 2 spinning I'm never without a spinning rig. 5 Quote

Don't always use them, but both BC and spinning have their maximum effectiveness for specific techniques and a proficient angler should be able to use either one. Dropshot...I'll pass lol 3 Quote

I've got 3 now and love them but I love my spinning rods too. Always have at least 1 of each with me. 1 Quote

Zcoker Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 This is just me, and I do know that they are the norm with bass fishing, but I HATE the bait-casting setups! I just love spinning rods and fish with them ALL the time, even won a national bass tournament using only them. So they have paid their dues nicely! Quote
ironbjorn Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 That entirely depends. The only thing I use a spinning setup for anymore is a Ned Rig. I don't care to drop shot, and weightless plastics (Texas and wacky), jerkbaits, shakey heads, small cranks etc I throw on baitcasters. Pressured California lakes, Great / northern deep, clear smallmouth lakes, and smallmouth streams it's definitely wise to have a spinning setup. Wacky rig on 12lb Big Game, 3/0 EWG, 5" Senko, and a 4 power Dobyns yesterday... Bass fishing is not as hard or as complicated as we so often make it out to be outside of the aforementioned extremely high pressured lakes or the ridiculously clear lakes. Shoot I've been on some of those northern clear lakes that don't see too much action and the smallmouth bite anything. I've been in some secluded smallmouth streams and found deep, fast water and a baitcaster and a squarebill was all I needed. Location is key. Know the water you're fishing and know your thumb. 1 Quote

Super User BrianMDTX Posted June 8, 2022 Super User Posted June 8, 2022 On my boat, I normally carry three baitcasters and two spinning rigs. I will always have a M/F or ML/XF set up for casting a weightless Senko TR (or a Zoom Trick or Mag 2). I used to have a M/F set up with a wacky rig all the time, but lately the ol’ reliable WR ain’t been all that reliable. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted June 8, 2022 Super User Posted June 8, 2022 But why have to be spinning VS baitcaster. Of course they both tool and can catch fish. Would it be better if I can only carry one setup (baitcaster of course) not 2 of those 3 of these and still can use with any techniques efficiently include dropshot shakey head Ned rig or whatever you think you can only catch bass with spinning? I catch plenty of fish in what techniques you mentioned, shakey head, dropshot, Neko rig Ned rig wacky rig weightless worm, you name it. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted June 8, 2022 Super User Posted June 8, 2022 Some days I use both or one or the other. Doesn't matter to me, so long as I'm catching. 4 Quote

If I knew how to do things better, I would be doing them. Unless it interferes too much with the rest of life. There are times when I do not want my sleep schedule disrupted just so I can go fishing at the perfect time. 2 Quote

ska4fun Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 I'm doing almost kayaking fishing only. Only baitcasting setups. Usually 3 or 4, one bass-bfs, another trout-bfs, one ML and a slow trolling one. There is no advantage for spinning reels in my usage. The loss of precision is unbearable. Quote
