Super User FishTank Posted June 6, 2022 Super User Posted June 6, 2022 I returned one and one was enough. It was surprisingly bad. 2 Quote

Just the same. Returned that. I don’t know what it is about the STX but it wasn’t a good reel. I had a premier as well and same thing. But the X, S and SX I enjoyed a lot. Hmmm…. Quote

Both have been good and fun to fish. The previous versions seemed to be fine. Not sure why this one was a dog. 2 Quote
TNBankFishing Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 The basic Revo is also a solid reel. One of the few 5 speed lefties. 1 Quote

I've got about 6 of the Gen 3 STX with the dual braking in LH 7.1 ratio and they have been awesome. Now I will say the originally were overloaded with grease and got better after a good servicing. I have a handful of Gen3 Revo S as well and have been happy with them too. Bought them all a few years ago when Cabelas was clearing them out in the Bargain Cave to make room for the Gen4 models. Couldn't pass up $79 for the Revo S and $119 for the STX. 1 Quote

Abu changed them all up on the Gen 4's. I dont like them either. Revo S went from centrifugal that worked well to magnetic. SX went from magnetic only to dual brakes that STX had and STX and Premier went to their IVCB or whatever they call it. Just my opinion, but I think they ruined them,... Well, except for maybe the SX. It may be similar to the Gen3 STX that I like. Quote

I liked the Gen 3 stx and the Gen 4 SX is good. I really liked the MGX2 as well. Quote

The IVCB brake could be a bit touchy and unstable, especially on the low setting, but other than that, IMO Revo 4 STX is a solid reel with great gears. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted June 7, 2022 Super User Posted June 7, 2022 I know not as many prefer them on this board, but I have a bunch of revo and like them. I have gen 3 and 4 STX, gen 4 SX, and an mgx. Some are multiples of the same model. as noted, the gen 4 SX and the gen 3 STX are close to the same. They have the same infinibrake system. The SX is heavier but they function and perform basically the same. The ivcb 6 in the gen 4 STX is my preference I think. I leave two of the six rollers ‘on’ and it’s a very light braking setup. It’s a smooth reel and I’d have another (not at MSRP, but rather at the normal sale price around $150). The mgx is a very different reel- the light body, aluminum main gear, smaller size, and light spool create a different feel and if you didn’t know it was a revo you could be convinced otherwise. The ivcb4 can’t turn on and off individual rollers and yet with 4 rollers ‘on’ I still feel the need to turn up the exterior dial almost to max. And yet it still flings baits off like there is no resistance. It’s an odd combination. I’ve not had any problems with any of them except that one of the gen 3 STX is a noisy reel. Doesn’t matter how much you clean or lube, it just has a steady rubbing noise on retrieve. It’s been checked out and is perfectly fine, just loud. i don’t need two new STX for $215 plus membership fees (they are regularly $175 on Amazon) but that’s not a bad deal if you’re outfitting a couple rods at once. Totally agree with this. I was already a member which is how I found out about the deal. I will say the membership deal is pretty sweet. Cash back on every purchase (which has already paid for the membership) plus free shipping on every order regardless of size, which is nice if you only need a few items. Quote
