I friend and coworker, same age as me is having health issues.  he will start dialysis soon.  I dont have any issues, but seeing him go thru it makes me want to take some steps towards exercise.  I have been occupying my time almost exclusively with kayak fishing.  it is not entirely a sedentary event, but I dont work up a sweat like I think I need to.  I thought about it last night and said to my wife, I am going to start climbing hills.  hiking!  then it struck me.  like lighting.  why dont I hike up to this lake and do some shore bass fishing?  it is a tough climb with some steep sections of switchbacks.

I just dug out my 2-piece UL rod and my 1000 series reel.  10 lb braid with 6 lb flour leader.  I packed a few tiny bullet weights and finesse hooks.  a few samples of plastic.   water..I forgot water!

I'll do it after work as often as I can.  it is the lake that actually compelled me to buy the kayak in the first place.

I bank fish a couple of times a week. It's good exercise. In hot weather, I like to get out there at sunup, and walk around casting as I go.                      I have a couple of spots that I'll stop and make more cast. If they don't produce, I'm hoofing it to the next area.

While much of our aging curve is genetic, there is no question that diet, exercise, and stress management can have a big impact on quality of life, particularly as one gets up in age. A good regiment will include cardio, strength, and range of motion. Find something you enjoy, and is convenient to do, or you will most likely not stick with it. Full disclosure, I polished off a bag of pork rinds this afternoon...

Ive been overweight my entire life and the last year I started to suffer some pretty bad back pain. 5 months ago I started drinking more water and watching what I eat...then about 5 weeks ago I started walking 5-6 nights a week, stretching and doing some core exercises. Between those 2 I've lost a little over 30lbs and my back and knees feel.better then they have in several years.

Oh and I'm a bank fisherman which like stated above can be a workout.

Your diet is by far the most important thing you need to improve on if your goal is to get lean, exercise is second. I lost a considerable amount of weight in the past 2 years, and I now have visible abs and visible veins along my arms, forearms, chest, thighs, and calves. I exercise, but most of my results came from eating a healthy diet. When it comes to fishing, I fish from the shore in freshwater, and wade fish in ocean, this type of fishing is a good workout, unlike bass fishing on a boat sitting on a chair drinking beers and eating junk food.

Understand that the first couple of months of eating healthy is the hardest time, after that you get used to it, and your body will thank you for it in the long run. The typical American diet is extremely unhealthy, loaded with fat, sugar, and highly processed foods, you need to eat very little of these foods, and focus on highly nutritious foods that are good for you. Stay away from fast food, sugar, highly processed foods, eat healthy, and exercise often, and with time you will achieve your goals.

This year I am 25 lbs lighter than this time

last......still need to drop 20 more, but the increase of energy is noticeable. Was just told

that they want to fuse my low back.....not going to happen but I am doing an hour of core a day......most noticeable is my casting engurance late in the day.

Not sure where I am going with this but there is no substitute for a  healthy weight and fitness

Hiking to a fishing spot is great excercise. I have found wade fishing is even better excercise.

That's exactly what I've been doing. Hiking. I have some ponds and lakes I am going to backpack to and camp. I've been doing 3 - 6 miles at a time for practice, 500 - 700 foot elevation changes.

There are no negatives to hiking that I can find. The nature, the exercise, the views when you get to the top, and the feeling that I'm getting stronger every time. And it's an accomplishment. Feels great.

You hiked? Cool! Looks a lot steeper in the photo :P 45 degrees is steep.

Dude the legs and the cardio....I made progress by my 2nd hike, but dang they do feel it!

Then I did another longer and higher hike twice in a row, diff days, and the difference was unbelievable. I recorded both and I was breathing way harder the first time.

Seems like I notice progress every time I go. I end up doing maybe 700 feet elevation change (elevation change counts all uphills, not just base to peak). Legs are like rocks already especially calves, my little gut is still there. Cardio is improving for sure, almost immediately.

I bring plenty of water and some food. I love it.

Right on bro!

Fyi pork rinds are an unprocessed, carb free food that's a good source of protein and healthy fats. It's popular among people on paleo and keto diets, not unhealthy at all. Eat them without caution!

I got my health wake-up call several years ago and started hiking. While hiking, I ran into a guy that was fishing. I was surprised to see he was actually catching fish there. That got me back into fishing after having put it aside for a few decades.

Most bank fishermen will fish as close to the parking lot as possible, so when you walk long distances, you’re more likely to fish areas that aren’t as pressured.

After my accident/stroke last May the Drs put me on an anxiety med to help with PTSD, it caused me to gain 40 lbs. I quit taking it and have been hitting the gym regularly. At this point Ive lost around 18 lbs and feel much better. It has also helped with anxiety and irritability.

I applaud you. I try to keep healthy enough to be active when I'm old. You might not think kayaking is exercise, but it is physical activity that you do for hours while not consuming calories, for most people.

My mom died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). It was a horrible ordeal that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I took her to the hospital in Augusta once to get a feeding tube implanted. As we were leaving the hospital we drove down a road that runs by the canal off the river. There's were people out there kayaking. I said "That looks like fun." She said "It looks like 'fun' is over for me." I determined right then that I was going to buy a fishing kayak if I had to sell something (guns) to get it. Life is short. Get busy living it while it's there.

Yeah, I go nuts when I don't get exercise. I walk every day. Sometimes the weather is too bad, but it's got to be really, really bad to keep me inside all day.

I googled Rick Clunn and a saw a picture of him wearing shorts, since you mentioned it. You need to have muscular thighs to be able to wear these shorts, not chicken legs, or cottage cheese thighs, if that is the case then it is best to wear long pants...lol

Well said @Basser2021. I often hike while fishing and enjoy wade fishing in the ocean, it is a good workout.

If you put on the right bait, you'll get all the exercise you need. Lol ?

I'm still relatively young and most of my exercise is from activities and sports I enjoy playing.  I enjoy playing racquetball, ice hockey, tennis, and now pickleball in relatively competitive forms on a seasonal basis.  Additionally, I like to ride my mountain bike and swim.  Couple that with lifting weights a couple times/week, and I feel like I'm in pretty decent shape.  I could drop a few pounds in my midsection but I also like to drink beer every once in a while and that's never going to end.

I don't know how people just run on the treadmill.  I find it to be soooooooo boring.

I probably don't eat the greatest.  I don't eat a lot of junk or fast food, but I am not a real big vegetable guy either.

Well you saw it, now I’ve seen it, now everybody else gets to see it.

Iconic Rick Clunn photo. Kind of reminds me of all those weird shots of Walter White in his underwear.

Who thinks they could rock the Clunn shorts?

Anyone who has well developed thighs and calves can pull off wearing shorts. Those with chicken legs or cottage cheese thighs should stick to wearing long pants. Bank fishing for hours is a good workout, unlike sitting on a boat and drinking beer, that is a great way to get a Hank Hill physique. lol
