Hello, so I am running low on the little vials of Bantam oil that comes with Shimano reels. for the last few years I have been using the Berkley Reel oil that was available at my local tackle stores and it appeared to be almost identical. worked awesome for lubing reels as well as oiling the brake drum on my Curado 200i

However, now, I cant get it anymore, and its not on Amazon Canada etc. Not much reel oil is. Even Cabelas.ca sucks.

the only reel oil I can find is the Abu Garcia oil.

anyone have any experience with it? it might even be the same as the Berkley oil since its all owned by Pure Fishing lol

thanks

I've been using Abu oil for years - never had an issue with it.

It's feels thinner to me than Bantam oil but works fine. It's not my first choice. I think the only downside would be that you might have to reapply it more often, depending on how you use your reels. Otherwise, I haven't had an issue with it.

It's what I use in most of mine. I dumped all the little bottles that come with the reels in a needle tipped dispensing bottle and have enough to last quite a while.

I also have a bottle of the "Precision Oil" that I keep in the boat in case I need it out on the boat.

Reel specific oils aren't a requirement.  Chances are much of it is just repackaged stuff you can buy elsewhere for either cheaper or a larger quantity for a similar price.  Some that I like to use are Mobile Velocite No. 6, Super Lube ISO 10, and TSI 321.  These can all be had at very fair prices in a quantity that will probably last the rest of your life.  The Super Lube ISO 10 and TSI 321 costs right around $10 for 4 ounces, and Velocite No 6 can be had for $20 per pint.

This much is true - I still use the Abu oil despite the fact that my BCs are Pflueger and Daiwa, and my spinners are Pflueger and Mitchell - don't have any Abu reels left in my active arsenal.

There is an audible "yuk!" when I put a little Bantam oil on my Fuegos.... :)

I think he meant fishing reel specific as opposed to brand specific. Sewing machine oil is really good bearing oil, I use that on bearings, my honda's motor oil on everything else except the level wind worm, where I use something a bit more viscous.

I like to use Super Lube ISO 220 gear oil for my frame bearings and worm gear.  On the SAE scale, it's 90W.  The Velocite No. 6 I referenced above is a super low viscosity ISO 10 like the sewing machine oil you're using.  Here's a handy little chart I like to use when looking at various oils.

its all I can find right now.

It'll be fine. Any reasonably thin oil will keep things humming.

I may get flamed but I use a drop of Dexron VI transmission fluid on the bearings and a little Lubriplate 105 on the gears.   I'm an auto tech so I have these things readily available.

I've been doing this for several decades (with the exception of Dexron III instead of VI years ago) with no problems.  My Ambassador 5500 from the 70s is still going strong.

I'm sure if I can get by using automotive products for decades any fishing reel specific lube should be good.

I used ABU oil for many years. It always worked well. Currently using the Lew's oil made by Lucas Products. I like it also.

I used up my Abu oil that came with the reels and moved to this because of the applicator needle.  Its great oil and you can't beat $6 and prime delivery.  It will last me years.
