Super User Bird Posted June 1, 2022 Super User Posted June 1, 2022 Was playing with my Border collie on the floor when this loud thump startled both of us. This Bird ran into the window at the house and broke it's neck " sad ". I've googled birds in VA and yet to find an answer. This bird is bigger than a bluejay but smaller than a crow if that helps....... what is it ? I've have several family members investigating but nothing. New species yet discovered ? Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted June 2, 2022 Global Moderator Posted June 2, 2022 Looking into this I’m seeing that they are typically found in SW Florida so it appears it lost it way. Might not be a bad idea to get ahold of a local biologist or bird watching group. Side note given your screen name I figured you’d be the first to have the answer. ? 1 2 Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted June 2, 2022 Super User Posted June 2, 2022 The rear facing windows in our house face the woods, and we have all sorts of birds back there. We have one window that birds would do that on a regular basis. some would knock themselves out and recover, and some would die on impact, I guess the angle of the sun and the surrounding greenery makes it behave like a mirror and look like a continuing path, and yes, it's surprising how loud a thud a tiny bird can make. The admiral said "fix it", so what I came up with was a few different colored post-its. As a bonus, now I don't have to go run around looking for my passwords... 1 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted June 2, 2022 Posted June 2, 2022 Our home faces west on a hill overlooking the lake. It's an A-Frame style home with large glass windows from roof to foundation. Birds are always flying into our windows. They seem to be chasing insects when this happens. About half the time they are killed outright. Often they lay there a while and fly off when they revive. It's sad when they die. 1 Quote
padlin Posted June 2, 2022 Posted June 2, 2022 Comparing what 12ponudbass and Bass302 found, the Mangrove has peach pants whereas the Yellow Billed has white. looks like it's the Yellow Billed, which has the whole east coast as it's habitat. 1 Quote

VolFan Posted June 2, 2022 Posted June 2, 2022 Right?!? The fact that ‘peach pants’ came up on BR is fascinating! 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 2, 2022 Global Moderator Posted June 2, 2022 Yellow billed cuckoo is a common bird in the Appalachians to me their call sounds like the first part of the “wipeout “ song my boss found 26 of them dead on top of a bank building one time, we figured they were migrating and hit the sign 1 Quote
schplurg Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 I'm no expert but I think that bird is dead. Could be resting I suppose. 2 Quote

Most birds do. In ornithology lab at UT they had a very impressive collection of real bird skins stretched over foam forms. Each bird had a tag of when and where it came from. A good many of them hit a window and died on campus haha 1 Quote
