Hey guys,

Just ordered a Dobyn's 805CB for deep crankin' and I need to select a 200 size reel. I'm a huge Tactical Bassin' fan - they keep things simple and have never steered me wrong, but their suggestion of the Shimano Tranx A 200 is sold out. Surprisingly, they recommend high speed reels (~7:1). I know most people recommend a ~5:1 for deep cranking. I've got all Shimano reels (at least casting reels), but I'm open to other suggestions. I know the Abu Garcia Winch is probably a good option. Budget is ~$250.

Thanks!

I would wait for the new Bantam, and get the more affordable JDM version. Deep cranking needs power instead of heavy line, and the new Bantam has that "infinite drive" feature to give you round reel power.

Ehh this is one of the best times of the year for these deep cranks where I live. I don't really want to wait too long and those are like $350.

In that case, IMO a 200 size Curado K is fine for that as well, if you want to stay in Shimano camp. Outside of that, Daiwa's Zillion HD/Catalina SV, Lew's Superduty, Abu's Revo Winch, they are all good.  The new Bantam would come out around July/August, according to Shimano's plan, and the JDM version would probably be around $300, maybe less.

Get the previous generation Bantam PG , you should be able to find one on the JDM sites or e bay.

Yea I was looking at that as well. The 5:1 is out of stock. 6:1 and 7:1 are available

Yeah 5:1 is what I would go, but 6:1 is fine as well. It's not as effortless as 5:1, but it won't tire you out that easy either.

I went with the Shimano Curado 200K in the 6.2:1 ratio...should be a good choice!

I was really considering that BB1...but I've heard such good things about the Shimano Curado 200K, so I ordered that in the 6.2:1

So get both and compare them.

I have both and like both. Both are smooth and cast well,  with maybe a slight edge to the BB1 in distance but the Curado K has better, consitant braking. I like the drag on the K better especially for deep diving baits. For all day ergonomics the BB1 is more comfortable to use. So really, you can't go wrong with either one.

I use a 40+ year old Ambassador 5500 for deep cranks.  It worked when I was a teenager and it still works now.

The winch is the one you want. Phenomenal spinnerbait reel also.

Edit: dangit I just realized you already purchased.

Gotta say I’m a pretty hardcore Daiwa guy but when shimano came out with the Curado K in 5:1 I jumped on it. In fact 2 of them. Been great reels, and I also have em paired on a Dobyns 805cb and switch back and forth on 764/5cb.

Yea the 5:1 is sold out everywhere so I went for the 6.2:1 which I think will be a good compromise

Omni actually has the 5:1 in stock...wondering if I should go with that...

It’s not the same that’s for sure. I’d order one with the TW sale still on and wait for it to restock then when it comes it sell the 6:1

edit can’t back order that stinks

Daiwa Tatula 200h 6.3 is what I would use.

That’s what’s on my 805CB but I put a 100 mm handle on it and it’s worked really well. The Lews BB1 is no slouch.

I'm going to try the 6.2:1 - I think it will actually work really well. It's amazing how many guys are using 6 speed (and even some 7 speed) reels for deep cranks (even DT20s, 10XDs, etc). In fact, I couldn't even find any pro anglers on YouTube who were using anything less than a 6 speed. Pretty interesting.

I'll see how the 6.2:1 is. If it is a real bear then I will order the 5 speed and use the 6.2 for something else.

Our current classic winner is a huge 5:1 guy.

Where did you get the 100mm handle from. Wonder if they have something like that, that would work for the Shimano Curado K I just ordered.

Yea I'm sure there are still plenty of guys using them, I was just saying I couldn't find any off hand.
