I'm patient and forgiving with people until they encroach on my territory and cast where I'm casting. That's when the "rude jerk" thoughts creep in.

Well... This morning I was fishing a pond. This pond has a cove that's surrounded by thick trees, but if you've explored enough you know some spots to gain access and cast around. I was on one side of the cove throwing a spinnerbait along the bank. It was slow going this morning. I heard a splash and looked over and saw ripples coming from around a log in the water on the other side of the cove. Usually I don't chase fish like that, but as slow as it was this morning, I threw to the log. 4-5 seconds later as I'm retrieving my bait, I see a fish being pulled out from the log and a man stepped forward out of the trees to get his fish. The splash I heard and saw was probably his lure and I threw right on top of him. I didn't even see him until he caught the fish. I felt like an idiot. Today I was the "rude jerk" and I didn't even mean to be. It makes me wonder how often people truly don't mean to be.

Lesson learned. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that you didn't know about. Good man for admitting it.

You weren't being rude nor were you being a jerk. You just didn't see the dude. Public places are just that, public. Sometimes folks bump into one another, bound to happen. Seems to me that nothing came of it except for this post, which says that in not all cases are people trying to elbow in on your fishing spot.

I don't consider what you did being rude. You didn't know he was there. A rude jerk knows you're there, and keeps throwing at you. Big difference in that vs what you did. The biggest difference being you actually care. Your post title is something many of us could probably do better.

This man probably posted something on social media about this rude guy at the pond. ?

Nah, you did nothing wrong.

I always feel like a jerk when I don't see the kayaker hiding behind the saltgrass and send a 4' tall wake his way as I go buzzing by.  The first couple times I would kill it immediately and said sorry....but to them I bet its just looked like I wanted to watch them struggle to not flip over from my wake. At least thats what I believe that finger represents.

The fact that you can never know what other people are facing in their life is the thing that always makes me feel guilty after losing my temper with a stranger. I know better, but sometimes my temper is quicker than my sense.

Good post. It's easy to quickly judge another person, especially if we think he's being rude while we're fishing.

The same thing happened to me one time, while bank fishing.  I apologized to him and explained I did not see him cast in that area.  I have had guys throw over me while casting, and I will not say anything until it happens several times.  Then I will explain the rules of common curtesy, just in case he didn't know them.  It never went any further that, the vast majority of fisherman are decent people!

While out in the boat I have had another boat pull up within 30 yards in front of the direction I'm fishing and fish in the same direction.  I LOVE  THIS, because it motivates me to keep catching in the water they just finished.  I just go IKE with every bass caught.  This is the best revenge!  In our South Florida Everglades Canal System, this is a common occurrence.  After a few decent catches, and a lot of hooping and laughing, they soon move off!  I do make sure I take some pics of them, and their boat, and put it on the local fishing sites.  Payback is hell!

Similar experience happened to me once, and the other guy was mad for sure. I apologized and explained that I truly didn't see him, but he didn't seem to believe me. Anyway, lesson learned, now when I bank fishing a spot, I always look around thoroughly first.

I didn't mean that I considered myself a rude jerk. I knew it was an accident. But he could have definitely thought I was a rude jerk.

Absolutely not. I gave him the "oh crap, sorry" wave and left the cove to him. I wasn't going to yell across it and disturb his peace or spook his fish.

I was driving up river about 30 mph on Friday evening. Some guy passed by me somewhat close at about 60 mph and shut his boat down right in front of me to stop and fish ……..  you never know what to think anymore

what kind of boat are you running to put out that type of wake?  I know for me in my kayak I will take a guy on plane going by over just about anything else, way less disruption

That's my question too.  None of my bass boats made much of a wake at when on plane.

Passing another boat while on plane is less disruptive than slowing down & coming off plane. Especially noticeable in the narrow canals & cuts in Florida waters.

I agree, if I come off plane, its idle speed only, especially in our canals.

I would like to think that no one truly intends on being rude and inconsiderate, but rather people have different boundaries or what not... Like, you know those people who stand awkwardly close when they are talking to you? Well, it's not awkward to them...

Other than that, some people just simply may not know the "rules of the road", like the whole coming off plane when passing someone, only to end up throwing wake at them... A lot of people think they are being nice...

Now I'm sure there are those that just think they own the water and everyone else is just in their way... but I consider them a extreme minority in the sport

The thing that gets me the most annoyed is when people without a clue about fishing feel the need to stop and talk to me about fishing. If someone is genuinely interested in fishing, or is a fisherman/woman themselves, I love to chat with them. But sometimes people just feel the need to talk to you if you have a line in the water. Deep down I know they're just trying to be nice and friendly, and I always try to be polite and kind in return. But for whatever reason I get really irritated at such a small thing. The part that bugs me the most is that I don't know why I hate it. ?

Seriously though, that's probably it. I like being alone when I'm fishing and strangers talking to me disrupts that.
