Almost didn't fish today, wind forecast 30 MPH. Decided to get out early and fish before the wind picked up.

I was on the lake by 5 AM, well before sun up. No one else in the parking lot.

Caught one fish just after daylight and noticed another fisherman motoring slowly my way. He asked if I could help him remove a hook. You betcha!!

Set the hook on his crankbait and it flew out of the water...turned and took the lure in the back...lodged in back of his shoulder.  He'd spent 15 minutes trying to reach the hook with no luck. I was the only other boat on the water...happy to help!

Got some braid and it popped right out. Said it didn't hurt much at all.

Really nice guy...we talked for about 15 minutes...and he gave me a square-bill and a homemade chatter bait as a "Thanks" for helping him out.

Super nice of him!

About an hour later I hooked a nice Pike on spinnerbait.  Went 29" | 5-lbs 4-oz.

Man, one of these days I'm going to have to get a trip figured out specifically for pike, they look like they are fun as hell

If you can get up in to Minnesota / Wisconsin / Canada, the pike fishing is better.

We have a few lakes here in eastern NE that are stocked. They are fun to catch! And really fight hard!

I used to fish out in Clearwater MN a fair bit, mostly caught redears, largemouth and bluegill, occasionally a smallmouth, and one pike, that was on a 9ft5wt fly rod on like a size 20 psycho prince nymph, I cut him loose whenever I saw the teeth, because I had no idea how to land him at the time lol

I should have a net.

Since I don't carry one in my boat, I just grab 'em behind the head, like you see in the picture.

Stay clear of the mouth / teeth.

Got hooked last year on a crank. The hardest part was convincing my wife to pull the braid!!!

First, great story and excellent gesture.

The only thing that might have made it a cooler story was if both of you were members here on BR. Out of all the bass anglers i ever encountered in my state, I can’t recall any of the being a member here or have heard of BR. Of course, I plug BR.

I too had to help someone who had a hook stick in her. She was one of the seniors I took fishing years ago. I remembered that same technique and I had my doubts. I couldn’t believe it worked and worked well. She was truly grateful and I was relieved. She has passed away since, God rest her soul.

I got hooked in the chin two years ago. Luckily Cotton Cordell's hooks aren't the best Lol

Cool story

Do you have to cut the shirt first?

Nope. Pulled the hook out of his back...but it was still stuck in his shirt.

He gave me wire cutters and I cut the barb off the treble. Left just a small hole in his fishing shirt.

You're not missing as much as you think you are.  They're far too abundant here and most of them are of the small, annoying, aggressive variety.  They ruin lures and that's assuming they don't bite you off completely.  It may seem like a novelty if you aren't from around here, but believe me they are more annoying than anything after a while.  The amount of them present is actually very detrimental to the ecosystem, which is why the daily bag limit is 10 in most of Minnesota.

Every once in a while you do catch a sizable one, but they are pretty rare.  If you want to catch really big ones with regularly, you need to go to Canada.

That was nice of you to help that guy out @DaubsNU1.

He's lucky to have found you and you knew what to do. I've had to remove a hook out of a friend before and it was not a pleasant experience.
