Parents want to buy me a graduation gift, $500 budget. The only Rod I own is a 7’2 Expride B MH-F with a curado 150 MGL. I only bank fish, in central florida. Occasionally I bank fish saltwater. Looking for something to compliment my current setup. Thanks for any advice!

I would buy a nice spinning rod and reel to go with your current setup.  There are things you can do with a spinning rod you can't with a casting outfit.

Definitely a M/F spinning rod, somewhere in the 7' range give or take, you looking for a complete setup in the $500 or are you just hunting a rod?

I think this is the real decision, and honestly I think you should have both at some point....

@Captain Phil's M/F spinning rec

@ironbjorn's (X)H/F casting rec

If the banks you fish are weed choked most of the year, maybe froggin, pitchin, and punching with a XH or H is more useful.  If you're dealing with pressured public water that's relatively open, maybe finesse tactics, neds, split shot, drop shot, etc are gonna get more bites.  Good luck and congrats!

Just looking for advice really. I feel like a can cover a lot of ground with what I got now. Have been thinking maybe a spinning outfit would be a good idea. Just not sure what I’d be able to do with a spinning that I can’t do now

Florida? Get a Heavy for jigs and frogs / heavy cover. I definitely wouldn't be messing with a spinning rod.

You may be surprised to learn how many Florida bass are caught on light tackle.  My spinning outfit is loaded with 8 pound Maxima mono.  There are days when power fishing just won't work.  There are hardly any bass that can resist a weightless Trick worm fished on light line.  Fighting a big fish on light line takes skill.  Obviously, you can't pull a ten pound bass out of the pads with 8 pound test.  If you hook it out in the open next to the pads, it can be done.

You can pick up one of those Shimano Vanford reels and an Expride spinning reel for around that much, should put you in some pretty familiar territory and might even leave you enough change for lunch if y'all jump on the memorial day offers from TW
