Stratocat_Joe Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 I've been a sports addict all of my life. When my wife and I were first married it bothered her that a big part of my life revolved around two seasons: baseball and football. From April through February, most of everything I watched on TV was baseball/football related and I felt I had to pay for cable/satellite to support my addiction. I always enjoyed fishing but I rarely watched any of it on TV, usually just in the February to April lull between football/baseball seasons. Flash forward a few years and we decided to cut the cord and rely on streaming. Initially, we used a cable-like platform that included channels to watch baseball/football but we slowly changed the platforms we use to where we now only pay $7/month for two streaming platforms. One of these platforms I picked purely for it's access to the Outside, Sportsmen, and WFN channels for the various fishing shows. I also frequently watch fishing videos on YouTube and stream the free live tournament coverage. We no longer pay for access to the channels that show baseball/football. Now, instead of baseball/football constantly on the TV, it's usually fishing-related content. I recently visited my Mom's house for an extended visit. She still has satellite and I found myself gravitating back to watching baseball again. I found this curious and believe I'm honestly still a sports addict but the amount of free/low-cost fishing content is now feeding the addiction. Has anyone else noticed a similar result? Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 31, 2022 Super User Posted May 31, 2022 You speak a foreign language to this ole' guy...... Streaming ??? I'm still trying to figure out Bluetooth. Lol Just get your ball scores while you're out on the boat, what I do. Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I haven’t watched baseball since Nolan Ryan retired. What was that, two or three years ago ? 1 5 Quote
Woody B Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I haven't watched any professional sports since they went.....woke. I pretty much only watched baseball before that. I haven't miss it. I get more stuff done around the house, and also get more time fishing. 5 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I can't imagine it making me any more addicted than I am already but I can't sleep until I hear Randy Blaukat's latest rant and hear Richard Gene go woo. 7 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 1, 2022 Super User Posted June 1, 2022 I haven’t watched tv in 4 months or so, just need to have the box reset. I dont watch professional sports, except a little braves baseball occasionally. I dont do streaming either. I Just watch a few videos of stuff I’m interested in. I will be back on Tv in time for Gator football though ! To answer the question. No. Tv doesn’t get in the way of my fishing ( except during college football season ) Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 1, 2022 Super User Posted June 1, 2022 I lost interest in pro sports decades ago. Dumped our cable almost 20 years ago...survived on Netflix until last year. Now we have Roku with Paramount and Disney - covers pretty much everything we have an interest in. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted June 1, 2022 Super User Posted June 1, 2022 Live sports, both professional, and NCAA, have been a part of my regular entertainment for as long as I can remember. Steaming live sports just doesn’t work very well. It’s choppy and slow. I still have direct tv and one of the primary reasons is the amount of live sports I get with it, specifically NFL Sunday Ticket in the fall. For as much as some people are paying for high speed internet and a streaming service, they could have basic satellite TV like I do. You just need to play some hard ball and negotiate every once in a while with them. Quote
schplurg Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 It will increase the amount of available time you have to fish! How long is a game, 3 hours depending on the sport? Almost one third of that time is commercials (televisions' sole reason for existence). I was a big hockey fan but stopped watching after the 2nd or 3rd lockout, walkout, strike, whatever. Used to go to games too. After that I completely lost interest. What do I care if they win or lose? Last time my home team went to the Super Bowl (9ers) I went fishing. Had the lake to myself. I have zero interest in sports like that anymore. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted June 1, 2022 Super User Posted June 1, 2022 Nope. I prefer to spend my free time doing stuff rather than watching other people do stuff. 2 Quote
MAN Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 We stopped watching sports in our household when it got too political. I can't stomach the cable hunting and fishing shows becouse they are so saturated with products plugs and heavily edited staged footage. I watch youtube hunting and fishing video's. Just bubba with a go pro out on the water or in the woods doing what bubba does. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 2, 2022 Super User Posted June 2, 2022 I watched my Rangers thump the Lightning and their supposedly "best in the league" goalie last night. That's the best they've looked all playoffs. LET'S GO RANGERS! 1 Quote

I’m still a bit bitter over the 2014 conference finals though… Quote

I was deployed in Africa, and my wife would face time me and point the camera at the tv, and we'd watch together. 1 Quote
Gera Posted June 2, 2022 Posted June 2, 2022 Get cable back, it will be cheaper than getting a tackle addiction. 4 Quote

LionHeart Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Haven't had cable or satellite in over a decade. And yes, I know what you are talking about. Went through a phase where I spent quite a lot of time watching bass fishing on youtube. As a consequence I wanted to fish all the time. Got slightly obsessed with it. Now the wife and I get maybe an hour of screen time a day after the kids go to bed, and let's just say she wouldn't wanna watch bass fishing videos on youtube. Quote
Functional Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Wife and I watch wheel of fortune and jeopardy during dinner/kid feeding and thats about it. Only sports I watch are F1 and Supercross which I tape and watch first thing in the AM before the kid wakes up and to put myself to sleep in bed. My fishing addiction is there...if TV was taking up time I could be fishing it'd be an easy cut out of my life. Unfortunately its the things I cant avoid that prevent me being on the water...thats when the bait monkey sits on my shoulder, lights up a fat cigar and lounges right by my ear and I get into trouble. Mbirdsley Posted June 26, 2022 Posted June 26, 2022 I played football and basketball in high school. Played college football for almost 4 full years ( decided graduated was probably a better idea than D3 ball). I was also a general sports nut from the time I was a kid untill 2017. Basically, I think I was burned out from sports and I acquired my first boat in 2017. I had gotten back into fishing for the first time since high school in 2011. From 2011-2017 it was maybe a once every other week thing. I always day dreamed about fishing but, when I got the boat in 2017 is when I left sports in the dust. In sports I was always trying to be the best that I could be. So fishing was really no differnt. Except at this point instead of watching. I could actually do it. I’m fairly competitive by nature any how. It was just a natural progression and gave me imho a better use of time than watching millionaires who give a crap about any one but, them selves. Quote
Goldstar225 Posted June 26, 2022 Posted June 26, 2022 I never got interested in team sports. Although I have cable I watch the local/national news each night. Aside from that I watch maybe 3-4 hours of television a month. Quote
