Couple questions.

Are you using braid?

If so, do you have some backing between it and the spool?

If the first is yes and the second is no - your braid is slipping on the spool. You could crank your drag all the way down and it won't help.

Take the braid off, put a few layers of some monofilament on the spool, tie the braid on with a double Uni-knot, then fill the rest with the braid...that'll stop the slipping.

you shouldn't be changing your drag when you catch a fish.

Before you leave home, you should have your drag set with a spring balance to 1/4 of the weakest link - line or leader test, or rod max line rating.  You'll be amazed when you find out how much drag 3 to 4 lbs really is.  I set mine at the guide closest to the reel.

7-lb drag set is enough for bluewater fishing.  Fish with soft mouths that tear out hooks are one place you may want to Reduce your drag after hook set.

Engage the reel, then pull on the line hanging from your rod.  See how easily it pulls out?

Now turn the star wheel on your reel (located where the handle is) clockwise a turn or two.  Then pull the line again. (The star wheel is your drag adjustment)

When you get to the point the line pulls out only when the rod is fully bent, turn the star wheel clockwise about a 1/2 turn more.

That's a good starting point.  Now you can adjust the drag up or down until it slips only when a fish pulls hard.

Good luck!

Be careful during this adjustment to not bend the tip past 90* or you could snap it off
