DaubsNU1 Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Picked up a few KDV 1.5's at Wally world...didn't notice until I got home they were silent square-bills. When do you use a silent square-bill? When one with rattles? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 28, 2022 Super User Posted May 28, 2022 I usually start out with Silent and then go rattle after to pick up a few extra or perhaps a bigger bite. Of course the reverse has also worked for me at times. A-Jay 7 1 Quote

papajoe222 Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 I go silent under tough conditions and combine them with a slow irratic retrieve. Another instance is under heavy fishing pressure like the last day of a long week-end. Super clear water is the norm on my home lake and I always reach for a silent crank first. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 28, 2022 Global Moderator Posted May 28, 2022 I like a rattle more in stained to dirty water, or around heavy cover. Silent in clearer water, more open water, and finicky fish. One of my last tournaments, I caught most of my fish on a KVD 1.5 Hard Knock in the chartreuse/black back in some very dirty water. I tried the silent and regular rattling versions of other baits but that one was the only bait I got bit on. 5 Quote

I think us fishermen underestimates a bass' ability to find food in water with zero visibility. They obviously do or they wouldn't be alive. Live bluegill don't make rattling sounds. But they do put off vibration and move water when they swim, just like a silent squarebill would. But it's a confident thing for me. In stained/muddy water, I'll throw a rattle/hard knock version 95% of the time. 2 Quote

Finessegenics Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 I don't usually think about it. I'll start out with a rattle but when I'm in a popular honey hole or feel like a squarebill should be working but it isn't, I throw a silent one instead. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've seen the difference first hand with a Flicker Shad vs a Shad Rap. Shad Rap is silent, Flicker Shad has a rattle. Shad Rap outfished the Flicker Shad on the same boat. Of course they don't have the same action as they are different baits but there has to be something there. It was mostly walleye though there were some bass mixed in too. My dad whooped my behind that day. 2 Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted May 29, 2022 Super User Posted May 29, 2022 I don't really think about the rattles when choosing a crankbait. I'm more interested in the water clarity, cover, and the amount of light. 1 Quote

Kev-mo Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 I honestly haven't found any difference. I mostly fish rivers so that might factor in... however I've caught fish in ultra clear water on rattlers and in chocolate bank full water on silent ones. By caught fish I mean multiple fish through out the day in different locations. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 29, 2022 Super User Posted May 29, 2022 I like rattling baits on the Mississippi . Usually when fishing lakes I prefer silent baits . 1 Quote
Woody B Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 What I've found is "most" of the time it doesn't matter. When it does matter silent is what's needed. (What I'm saying is most of the the the rattle doesn't hurt anything....but real baitfish don't rattle) 2 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 I honestly just buy it regardless if it rattles or not. I buy square bills and regular cranks based on situations and certain lakes/river systems in mind. I’m more interested in color and what kind of diving/retrieve action that it has. Same with regular cranks. If I’m picking a dirty water color I’ll make sure to specifically find one that rattles. I have more regular cranks that rattle than non rattles. Square bills I have more silent ones. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted May 31, 2022 Super User Posted May 31, 2022 I'd say 50% of the time, it doesn't matter. Sometimes it does, however. And sometimes, it matters what kind of sound the rattle makes. As for when I throw each, well, I just tie one on, and if it doesn't get bit after a while, I change it up. I let the fish tell me what mood they're in. 2 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 Locally the silent SBs get bit far more consistently then rattling SBs even in muddy water. Quote
