I like fishing in the rain, as long as it’s warm weather. The 50 degrees would be a “no go” for me. BRRRR!

In Florida, from mid June until October it rains.  The mornings are hot with thunderstorms rolling in around 3 PM.  Some are nasty.  If you have never seen a Florida downpour, you have no idea what I am talking about.  We call them "frog stranglers".

Some of the best bass fishing I have seen was in the calm after one of these storms.  If there's lightning, you are asking for trouble.  Years ago, our bass club had two anglers knocked out of their boat by lightning while fishing a tournament in Okeechobee.  Thankfully they survived, but it wasn't pleasant.  I once saw a bass boat in a Santee Cooper marina that looked like a piece of burned toast after lighting hit the front bass seat.

Fishing tournaments as long as I have, I have fished many a rainy day. Like others have stated, light rain is good.  Heavy rain is bad.  A couple of things I have noticed over the years.   Flipping does not work well for me in the rain.  I do much better flipping when the sun is bright.  Bright sun positions the fish in and under cover, so that may explain it.  I have my best luck fishing in the rain with a spinnerbait.   I once won a rainy day tournament in Kissimmee fishing a chartreuse spinnerbait with a "fire tiger" orange colored grub trailer.  When the sky is dark like that, bright colors work better for me.

I'm too old to fish in the rain these days, but I can remember many dark rainy mornings sitting in a marina full of bass boats wait for first light.   I can also remember asking myself why I wasn't home in bed.  ?

One of the lakes near me with the best size fish is a nuke cooling lake.  Very, very tough to fish but rewarding if you figure it out for a day.  Best thing about it is, the "hot" half doesn't freeze.  Ever.  Not even below zero.  I have been on that part of the lake in February in my boat when the hot discharge was pumping.  The steam rising off the water is as thick as heavy fog and EVERYTHING gets wet.  You can't use braid because it soaks up the water and freezes as soon as you reel it in.  You, your rods, your boat...all dripping. It's a brand new level of cold. I've had the water on the shoulders of my coat freeze and break as I'm putting my boat back on the trailer.  And bring salt 'cause the boat ramp will deliver your truck and trailer to Poseidon...as Gump said, "I'm not a smart man".

We don’t get those daily pop up thunderstorms like Florida does in the summer up here. What we get are more sporadic, often stronger storms coming in with low pressure after a prolonged period of high pressure that is associated with hot, dry weather. The lake often comes “alive” for a period before and during these low pressure fronts in the summertime.

Last summer was historically dry and hot here and we lacked those fronts for 2 months. Finally in August we started to get some pressure changes with rain. My best period of fishing last season by far was from early august through about Labor Day.

We get those afternoon thunder boomers, ya don't want to get caught in one. I usually launch after it's blown through.  After a hot, humid, still day it will fire em up.

What a day... I went to the lake this morning with my current gear for 3.5hours in the rain. I got a couple bumps but ended not catching anything :(

I go to the store and buy some new gear that was suggested, waited till the late afternoon and I hit up another lake!!! I didnt want to give up...lol

I ended up catching 3 in 2.5 hours. No monsters. I caught 1 on a spinner bait and 2 on a black and blue chatterbait.

I didnt catch any of them on the retrieve......they all 3 hit as soon as the lures hit the water...lol

I don't mind fishing in a Light rain, even with a breez, but during a moderate to heavy rain, I'm stayin home. I played a round of golf once in a steady downpour, with 10 mph winds, Never again.
