I'm working 8 hours of OT Saturday and 4 more hours on Monday, so no holiday vacation for me this weekend. If I do get to fish, it will be close to home.

Thank you and the others being out there to try and control the crazies.

I lose 6-7 mpg just pulling my small aluminum around (Honda Ridgeline), but 80% of my boat fishing is less than 20 miles round-trip, and the other 20% is within an hour or less from the house, so it’s not too terrible - plus I offset a lot of that with my smaller 10hp 4-stroke boat engine.

Wow, 6-7 mpg is a lot. Those Ridgelines get decent mileage if memory serves?

It's been years since I stayed in a Hotel.  We've got a camper and take a few vacations throughout the year.   I have to work Monday so no Memorial Day vacation for us.   I'll fish Saturday and Sunday.

My Titan get's 19mpg empty, 15mpg towing my aluminum boat and 11mpg towing our camper.

My buddy tows a camper all over with a tundra and gets 10 mpg or less, I was like man, doesn’t that sting? He said not as bad as hotel/restaurant accommodations for 5 people every night haha

As someone who runs hotels for a living I must object to that remark. ?

I’m definitely more of a hotel, cabin, or resort kinda guy @Koz. I was never into the camping thing. Sleeping in a tent just doesn’t appeal to me.

A camper or an RV, I could probably do if it has air conditioning.

That's my wife - while we did do 'camping' once a year for quite a while, it was more 'glamping'. Pop-up with two queen-size beds, heat, etc. We'd cook alfredo from scratch and have rib-eyes with it.

Her idea of 'roughing it' is a hotel that doesn't have room service.

Back when I had the runabout - I'd toss my tent and few things under the bow, fish all day, camp overnight on Wawatosa (Boy Scout) Island on Tonka...then pick up the fishing the next morning.

For me - what I can carry on my back is plenty to go camping with.

I’ve tent camped for years during summer in the swamps of south Alabama and on the beach in South Carolina. Let’s just say when my friends with camper say “do you want to sleep in the A/c on an air mattress?” I accept haha

it doesn’t cool down until after midnight, it’s like a sauna in the tent

Lol ya that’s the exact reason I’m not really into tent camping. I really have no interest in trying to sleep in a puddle of my own filthy body sweat.

I could probably do if it the daytime temps were about 70 max and it cooled off to 50 at night time.

Mine is older, a 2012 model. Depending on seasonal gas formulation, I get 13-15 pulling a boat, 19-21 just driving around, and can pull upper 20s with a long interstate run.

That is the worst.  I tend to camp early and late and never in the summer....but I love sleeping outside.  Can't deal with the heat for **** though.

When I hear of people going camping during the 4th of July I just have to wonder how they intend to actually get any sleep. Maybe they just get so drunk they don’t care lol

I have a confession to make - even though I run hotels for a living, I don't enjoy staying in hotels all that much unless I'm in a suite at an outdoor type resort. I'd rather stay in a cabin or a tent.

But the reason is simple - since I work in hotels, one of the goals of my vacations are to get away from hotels.

I’m currently at the end of a fishing vacation. Worst vacation I’ve ever had. Starts off with $5 a gallon gasoline. I get up to northern Wisconsin at the start of a cold front. Fishing is very slow and the weather very cold, then my motor quits. Another cold front comes in with 2 days of all day rain. I’m giving up and returning home today. At least I saved a lot on boat gas…….

Oh I can definitely see that.  Its like if you worked at a specific restaurant almost every day, you'd get sick of their food.

One of the best investments I've ever made for camping in TX was an window AC unit and an AC boot from acboot.com for my tent. Doesn't keep it "cold" during the 100 degree days but it will keep it below 80 in the tent midday... When the sun goes down it will freeze you out though! Makes for some great sleeping! Just find a campsite with an electric hook up and you're golden.

(I haven't been on a vacation in over 15 years)

It’s been almost 10 years for me now. Not this year either, it doesn’t look like.

Actually, one of my customers said I could stay in his guest cabin at his home in the NC mountains FOR FREE. The problems are that 1. I’m not so sure my old SUV would make it that far, and

2. The gas prices being what they are, it would wipe out most of the gain of staying free.

So I'm wondering, how many of you are cutting back your planned vacations or planning to make a last minute decision because of gas prices and inflation?

It’s business as usual for me. I’ll just work more if need be.

My Father was stationed at ROTA in ‘91 - 92. Gas was $7 per gallon over there then.

That is awesome and hilarious, I'd love to see that setup somewhere.

I'm going to plan my hiking camping trips around the weather, as best as possible. I could try carrying a 5,000 BTU and a whole stack of those portable solar panels. it's only 4 miles to one lake :) "Screw the backpack, I got me a motorized pallet jack from Harbor Freight!"
