Money that you regret spending on tackle related items

I can’t afford those kind of regrets, so I don’t have a lot. I guess that’s one benefit of being poor. I bought a $25 rod with medium action instead of MH, and I still regret that, so I have regrets, but they are just much smaller.

 

I've found over the years that many things I regret buying, I find a use for them eventually, or get something out of them.

This,... Only I tend to use the 90 size. I couldn't tell you how many fish I've caught on Whopper Plipper and Choppos. ALWAYS have one on deck. I don't pulse them like a popper,... I just wind them slow and let them slowly chug along.

Yep-yep - 90s are my go to and they always seem to produce...pike as well as bass.

I’ve done that for LMB. Get a good retrieve going, stop, and rip it a foot. Probably have caught more on a Whopper 90 that way than with a straight retrieve.

My two were super geary feeling even after adding extra grease. Cleaned them this year and regressed them. They were so bad on a trip I switched them out to the backup reels I packed. One feels much better the other only slightly better. They are now backup reels for me.

The jig box is the only one I like and it makes a great spinnerbait box.  In the pic below, I used a Dremel to cut a groove in each arm and it holds spinnerbaits perfectly.

I've bought a ton of tackle, don't regret a bit of it either. Now do I regret the order in which I bought things? Yes, I definitely get more mileage year in and year out with some baits, like tubes, and poppers, and lipless to name a few. I definitely did not buy those before a bunch of other things and probably missed fish because of it, but that's just the way it goes I guess. I have a LOT of tackle, enough to run a small store really, and plenty of it goes unused for entire fishing seasons at a time, but I tend to find that in my usual haunts that certain lures every year are "on" and it is rarely the same ones year after year except a few. Last year I absolutely smashed on paddletail swimbaits, spinnerbaits and walking baits, the year before I couldn't buy a bite on any of those, it was all about the squarebill 1.5 size, and occasionally lipless and poppers, so knowing that somewhere in my collection I have the right key is comforting to me, it's just a matter of going through the process of elimination until I find the right keys

I've done really good on buzz baits and hollow body frogs at various times and locations over the years, but the WP just doesn't produce.  I don't necessarily regret buying one and trying it.  I'll try just about any lure at least once to give it a chance.  What I regret is buying three of them at once when DSG had their buy two/get one free sale.  So now I have three of them that don't work instead of one.

Try em at night. They produce way better after the sun goes down. Same with chatterbaits.

 I know it's not a popular opinion around here, but I regret buying my Dobyns rods. Not that they're not good quality, they are, but I think they're over priced for what they are. You can get more rod for your hard earned $$$ elsewhere, and still get a good warranty and great customer service.

At the current moment.  Lipless cranks.  Kinda went all in this winter.  Built a rod for lipless and bought some LC 3/4ozer which, are like $15 a pop. Also bought 6th sense 1/2ozers and some other random ones.  I used them twice this spring. 
 

 

historically probably my rapala DT’s. I can’t buy a bite with them. I’m actually thinking of getting rid of them  as they are taking up space in my crank box

Pflueger President spinning reels.... both fell apart in under a year 

 

Quantum reels with the metallic finish both spinning and casting.  Just bad all the way around. Looked cool though. 

 

Big swimbaits . This is the one that causes the most regret for me.  I dropped $750-$1000 in gear and lures just to try it out. It was fun at first but I really don't catch a lot on them.  With that said, I do catch fish on the 6in Magdraft but not much on anything bigger.

This saddens me.   Not first time I've heard it...but only last couple years.  The President used to be such a solid value.  Hope they can unscrew whatever they screwed up.  Better be fast .... reputation is taking a hit

Alright, I will remember that and give it a try.  I don't do a whole lot of night time fishing.  Usually a few times in mid-summer when it starts to get hot out and there's too much recreational boat traffic during the day.

 

Chatterbaits have produced for me.  They have been a productive lure for several seasons now.  I normally toss a black spinnerbait at night time, but I could see a dark-colored chatterbait working too now that I think about it.

The last good model was the one proceeded the model with the wood handle. Sad thing with these reels,  they were great until they weren't and I really didn't miss treat them. They were just not made well.  On the other hand I have had a Shimano Symmetry that I got around the same time as the Pfluegers and it feels the same as the day I got it.

My only regret is buying a Heddon Sonic back in 1976.  It was the first crankbait I ever owned.  That one purchase started me on a crankbait addiction that may get me on an episode of hoarders some day.

As far as tackle, it's not that I own baits that won't successfully catch fish. It's having an abundance of techniques and many may get overlooked for the entire year if what I'm throwing keeps producing.

I'm the opposite. I actually traded a '66 Mustang for a fishing boat. I too sold the boat for 1/4 of what I paid and it was a good day. I've been fishing from the kayak for almost 10 years now and love the simplicity and convenience of it, especially since I have little space to store a boat. But I only paid $800 for my current ride. Still, I would like a jon boat rigged with a casting deck and bow mount trolling motor. The outboard is not strictly necessary.

 

When I was younger and poorer during my first marriage, I shopped the Walmart discount bins usually in boxes on the bottom shelf. I bought up a ton of Riverside soft plastics in all the wrong colors. I have a big Tupperware box that holds all the things I don't use but don't want to discard. It's about half full of these. I didn't know at the time I'd be fine just owning black/blue jigs and craw imitators. I listened to all the experts whose job it is to sell as many products as possible. I also ended up with a bunch of Rebel hardbaits in off colors that didn't work well. I gave most of those to the local charity thrift shop.

me too. Because I own two Trions that just keep going. The most trouble free spinning reels I've ever owned.
