Super User Boomstick Posted May 22, 2022 Super User Posted May 22, 2022 I have been using Owner Mosquito hooks for drop shots and wacky rigs for a few years now with great success. I have to order a few more and I'm curious if I should try the Mosquito lights instead? Quote

Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted May 23, 2022 Super User Posted May 23, 2022 I prefer the shape and how the bait sits on the lites compared to the originals. The compromise is when they say lite they mean it. The wire is so thin I've broken quite a few lifting fish out of the water or using pliers to get them out. Trokar has a similar shaped DS hook to the lite and it's a little thicker. 1 Quote

I figured using a 6-8lb leader on 12# line I wouldn't have that issue so it might be worth a shot. I think I'll stick to the originals, I've never broken them or even bent them out and they always hook them in the side of the mouth as well. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 23, 2022 Super User Posted May 23, 2022 Try Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hooks. They work great for me and I have never broken one. 1 Quote

I tried Gammy circles and I couldn't hook a fish....at all. Not sure why. When I switched to Owner Cutting Point SSW, I started to enjoy dropshotting again. I read SSW were designed for live bait, but I love them with small plastics. Hook up rate is awesome, but a huge added benefit is that with the point turned in just a few degrees, they fish extremely well in brush. Quote

If what you have been using has been working well for you (sounds like you're pleased with the originals' performance), just stick with them. Quote

The most likely cause is the "hook set". With circle hooks you lift the rod and reel quickly, but you NEVER "set the hook". The circle hook glides up the gullet and lodges in the jaw joint 95% of the time. A traditional hook set simply jerks the hook out of the fish's mouth. 1 Quote
PressuredFishing Posted May 23, 2022 Posted May 23, 2022 I like the lights for smaller game fish like trout and crappie, normal is nice for bass plastics, like Tom mentioned I also like it for live baitfish. Quote
Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted May 23, 2022 Super User Posted May 23, 2022 I've never broken one or bent one out when the fish is in the water. Its only happened when I lift a fish out of the water or use pliers on them. Honestly if the standard mosy hooks work for you and you like the angle of the eye/orientation of the bait it may be best to stick with what works. I kind of did the same thing except I started with the standard Gami DS hooks which worked great. I went and tried all kinds of different DS hooks looking for a better 1. I found some great DS and even wacky rig hooks but ultimately I came full circle back to the standard Gamis. Quote
EWREX Posted May 23, 2022 Posted May 23, 2022 i use the normal mosquito for majority of my dropshot fishing when nose hooking the bait. never had an issue Quote
