FrnkNsteen Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 Got one and it's ok, but in my experuence the "ACB" brakes are a little underpowered. For me it's a great pitching rod, but for skipping, I have had better luck with a '17 Tatula SV. 2020 Tatula SV isn't bad either. Saw a video bragging it up as a good BFS reel, even if that isn't what they intended. FWIW,... I put my Pro SP on my Dobyns dx746 and pitch jigs around cover with it. Quote

It was painful to watch him try and skip with it. I agree that sv spools make it easy but with some good technique and the right baits the reel is absolutely usable as a skipping reel. Might even be more free skipping and good for the advanced skippers. Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted May 21, 2022 Super User Posted May 21, 2022 It's awesome with braid. No backing required. The shallow spool prevents dig in and backlashes are easy to pick out. I blew mine up good a couple days ago. Hit a limb while trying to skip under a very low hanging tree. It pulled right out since the line can't get loops down deep in the spool. I set my brake on 7 and set the spool tension for just a touch of side play and it's perfect for pitching. Tighten the spool tension 3 clicks and its ready to skip. No other adjustments needed. 3 Quote
Craig P Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 It’s been on my radar. I was tempted to pick one up one day at Cabelas as I really liked it but the purpose of that trip was for a Curado 150mgl and they are a little harder to find in stock. Quote

Don't get me wrong,,. The shallow light spool definitely helps with skipping, and if you do backlash, it's easy to pick out. Kind of like when we used to tape the spool for the same benefit. Not a bad idea trying it with braid. I have 20lb flouro on mine right now and that's all I've used on it so far. By the way,... I mis-typed.... I have mine on a Dobyns DX745C,... Not a 746. 1 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 Sure looks pretty on a DX rod though for what that matters! ?? 1 Quote

Have you played with adjusting your entry point of the skip closer to the target? Also, as @T-Billy said, no crime in adding a dash of spool tension with this reel if you need to. It isn't a Daiwa where this is viewed as blasphemy, even though it 'aint. 1 Quote

I'm just not very adept at skipping yet and the SV is a little more forgiving. Both make it a little easier than the typical reel though. I supposed it is due to the shallower, lighter spools not having as much momentum to them so easier for the brakes to help keep it in control. Still practicing and slowly getting a little better. Have to remember to lift the rod tip as the jig approaches the target. If I remember to do that it typically goes better. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 21, 2022 Super User Posted May 21, 2022 It’s on my list. I like the reels slogan “Less line, more fish” I do like the shallow spool on this reel. I liked it so much I picked up an aftermarket shallow spool for my Abu Garcia Revo X and it has become a must carry every trip. loaded with some 8# Berkley Big Game and mounted on a medium rod I am able to cast some pretty light lures. No backlash I could not handle to date. Quote
