RippinLips2t Posted May 19, 2022 Posted May 19, 2022 Hi everyone, i moved to FL and decided to get into bass fishing so i’ve got a few new rods and wanted some opinions on line. I have a 7’ mh f that i’d like to use for a do it all for anything 3/8oz and up. chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs, swimbaits, lipless cranks, some big topwater and frogs. what does everyone else run for line on a similar setup? i’ve been using 20lb for everything but it tends to dig and i don’t want a breakoff in the thick stuff like everyone talks about. i don’t throw into anything too heavy but pads and some grass is normal. i’m afraid going up the line may be too thick thus reducing my line capacity or messing something up? again i’m new so go easy on me, any help appreciated. tight lines! 1 Quote
Super User Solution T-Billy Posted May 19, 2022 Super User Solution Posted May 19, 2022 I do all my heavy cover fishing with 40# 832. Plenty strong enough, big enough in diameter that dig in isn't an issue with standard spools, but small enough in diameter to get significantly more casting distance than 50#. It'll handle all the tasks you mentioned very well. 3 Quote

Deephaven Posted May 20, 2022 Posted May 20, 2022 Power pro 30 is on most of my all purpose sticks Quote

RippinLips2t Posted May 20, 2022 Author Posted May 20, 2022 i was referring to powerpro 40lb btw Quote

Super User casts_by_fly Posted May 20, 2022 Super User Posted May 20, 2022 I have 832 braid on two reels. I use 30 on a MH/MF which I use for cranks, lipless, light swim baits, the occasional topwater, etc. The rod was a bit ‘slow’ with mono but is awesome with braid. I wouldn’t want to throw heavier on it. i have 50 lb 832 for fishing frogs, heavy pitching in weeds, and some other all around big bait duty (huge spinnerbaits, Alabama rigs, etc) for a rod that heavy. Would 30 work for that? Probably, but hauling in a 4 lb bass with 10 lb of weeds on him would dig 30 lb into the spool. The 50 won’t be as bad. I’m not sure how lipless crankbaits fare on 50 lb braid but everything else you mention would be right on for 50. Quote
Lead Head Posted May 20, 2022 Posted May 20, 2022 I use 832 in 30, 40, and 50. 30 on a couple of all purpose rods. 40 on jig and 50 on frog rod. Switched from power pro to 832 3 years ago and haven't had any break off issues. I would definitely suggest going from 20 to 40 for where you are fishing. 50 would be fine too, but if you're tying good knots, 40 will probably fail your rod before the line. Quote
txchaser Posted May 20, 2022 Posted May 20, 2022 40lb Vicious no-fade or Fins sling braid (also doesn't fade). They are closer to 30lb diameter, really strong and a tight 8-carrier so not much fraying. Quote

Where I fish we have huge Lily pad fields, and I fish right in them a lot. When I've snagged a jig or a big single hook swimbait in them I've never broken off at the knot using 40 lb Daiwa J8 when trying to break them loose. I have with 30lb, but not often. I stick to 50lb J8 for frogs though. With 2 big hooks and hero hook sets I prefer not to break off and leave a fish to live with a frog stuck in its mouth. Quote
throttleplate Posted May 20, 2022 Posted May 20, 2022 2 hours ago, RippinLips2t said: do you have issues with quick deterioration? read a lot about 832 wearing quickly and snapping. I used spiderwire since the 90,s. I trust spiderwire but this year i put on 832 to to see what all the talk is about. I am using spinning reels. After 3 fishing trips with 30# moss green 832 here are a few differences i noticed. The color hasnt faded yet opposed to spider wire which fades very fast. Spider wire is more limp, softer as in i cut my hand on the 832 pulling out a snag, spider never cut into me. Spider is like soft rope and 832 is like wire rope. Spider catches the wind like a jib sail, 832 not so much and casts farther. Spider frays and line looks fury but it never has let me down. So far the 832 shows no symtoms of fraying. I occasonally get a wind knot as i did last outing. I pulled the line wearing gloves on each side of the loopy knot, pulled real hard and the line sounded like a file on steel and the line cut into itself and cut itself in half. Never has the spider wire cut itself in half doing that. Closing the bail by hand after a cast the spider wire will lay over the bail and fall into the line roller with ease, the 832 doesnt lay over the bail as it is more stiff, wirey and doesnt fall into the line roller as easilly. This has caused me some issues and must pay the utmost attention when starting to reel up slack line. To sum it up after only 3 outings i miss my spiderwire. Lets give it a few more outings and maybe the 832 will limber up. Quote

I'm only into my 2nd season with it, but so far no, no issues at all with it. Much rounder and smoother than 4 strand, handles great, and it's the most abrasion resistant braid I've found. That gore fiber lives up to the hype IMO. 4 hours ago, throttleplate said: To sum it up after only 3 outings i miss my spiderwire. Lets give it a few more outings and maybe the 832 will limber up. It will, but it won't get as limp as the Spider Wire due to the Gore fiber. 1 Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted May 20, 2022 Super User Posted May 20, 2022 When I first started Florida fishing I was using a lot of lighter braid like 20lb & 30lb. It didn't take me long to find out the dig in problems were exacerbated by the light braid. I would only use the lighter braids on spinning tackle now. For casting reels stick with 40lb as a minimum but prefer 50 or even 65 for the extreme stuff. Lesson learned. 1 Quote

cyclops2 Posted May 20, 2022 Posted May 20, 2022 My bass attack any size or color line. I use the #4 Mono & 6# Braided for the perch. Only makes a slight difference. But it makes casting a lot easier with small floaters. Quote

Must be your knots. I could pull a tube with both lines using an improved clinch. Quote
