Hey everyone! I am going to get a new rod soon and did not know what size is necessary for me to get next. I have a medium spinning rod, two medium heavy casting rods, and one heavy casting rod. What should I get next, a medium, medium heavy, or heavy casting, or a medium spinning or a medium light spinning. I fish a river a lot so I use a lot of spinning, but I also fish lakes quite a bit so I might need another casting. Wanted to hear which one you would pick as your next rod. Thanks!

I don't see any crankbait rods in your list. Do you throw treble hooked baits enough to justify a more moderate action rod?

I throw them a bit but I don't think I throw them enough to buy a separate rod for them right now. I was thinking about getting one later down the line this year maybe.

Just a guess, but if you do a lot of spinning then maybe a ML spinning rod.  Depends on how light you plan on going.  I used a MF casting rod for several years for crankbaits before buying a crankbait specific rod.  Your Medium spinning rod could fill in for one until you feel the need for a dedicated crankbait rod.

It doesn't hurt to have multiples.  Maybe a second Medium power spinning rod would be more beneficial to you.  That's a question only you can answer.

Personally once I tried a baitcast reel I didn't want to use my spinning rods anymore.  Options today are pretty good for a reasonably priced baitcast reel that will handle down to 1/8 oz. as long as you have a proper rod.  Of course there a some that can cast 1/8 oz. on a MH casting rod, but I ain't one of those people.

If you haven't yet, I'd delve into finesse fishing as it's a skunk preventer year around.

Get a 6'6 med fast that's on the lighter side, 1/8 - 3/8 for greater versatility.

It's what I use for many lighter techniques.....3" Keitech, drop-shot, even 1/16 Ned's.

How's that for a direct answer ? Lol

I do finesse and power fishing but do have a little more interest in light tackle for smallmouth. I have a boat, a Tracker 175 to be exact, but I do some bank fishing as well along creeks and rivers.

Ok thanks I have dumbed it down to a few spinning rods in case that is what I get next. I am looking between some of the St Croix options or the Daiwa Tatula spinning rod. I really do enjoy creek and river fishing as that is what I am close to in PA so I might go with another spinning rod. Thanks!

sounds like you need another spinning rod, 7'6" M for long cast for smallies in open and mostly clear water. and another 7' or 6'10" for pitching as well. so which one you have already? buy your next spinning.(thats what I would do).

I prefer ML for finesse fishing personally. But not whippy, still want some decent backbone with a soft tip.
