I had to kill this  30" long copperhead on our property's walking path the other day. I went out to walk two of our dogs. One of the dogs, Poppy, had his head just 4" from the raised snake's head smelling it. I was not sure what I was seeing at first, the copperhead was stretched straight out and had flattened its body so low it looked like the ground.  I just saw a head sticking up. Once I realized it was a snake and a  copperhead to boot  I yelled at Poppy to get away and he did. I tied both dogs to a tree and killed the snake with a stick. We as a family all walk on this path many times a day walking our 4 dogs or the girls just out walking. I went home and got the girls and we went back out and got a photo.   Had the copperhead been deep in the woods I would not have harmed it but this is just to close for comfort. I like snakes and have caught hunderds when I was a young. We've  seen several common snakes in this area in the last couple of weeks but this is the first copperhead we've seen in about four years here and the fourth one we have dispatched on our property ~ Here's a photo of the the one the other day and another of one some years that was very close to my 4 year old daughters electric car.

This guy ( or girl), was sitting in our driveway this afternoon when we came home. The kid thought it was a cobra ?. Just one of many eastern hog-nosed snakes we get around here. They are a pretty cool looking snake, as when disturbed they flatten their head/neck out like a cobra. This one was pretty colourful, and gave us a nice little show before I finally moved him off the driveway with a branch so I didn’t run him over. I have no problem with snakes around our place, I’d rather have more of them which means less mice, chipmunks etc. to chew up vehicles, boat wiring and everything else that they live to destroy.

Had to laugh, the wife put out snake deterring powder around the front bushes against my advice and as I was standing there a baby black snake came right through it.  ?

Happens everyday in my line of work. Snake away, moth balls, plastic owls, etc. None of it ever works, but it all sells like hotcakes

In a past life I owned a pest control company.  Wanna know what does work?  Urinal blocks.  Take ‘em, put them in a sock and smash them into bits with a hammer and spread them out wherever you don want Mr. Nope Rope.  Had a client that couldn’t get rid of them out of a shale stacked wall, I threw about 3 handfuls into the rock and before I could get away it looked like a scene out of Indiana Jones.?

close. except this snake didn't have the nifty pattern.  the dark part of that snake, is the color that the snake i saw, but the whole snake  except the belly, which is the right color.

Haha.  It became a staple for a lot of jobs.  Drawbacks were that it smelled and you had to reapply if it got rained on.

We have many varieties of snakes, but only 2 that are venomous and commonly found in Central Kansas. Prairie rattler and Massassauga.

There are Timber rattlers and Copperheads in the Eastern part of Kansas.

Western Diamondbacks and Cottonmouths are very rarely sighted in the state.

In Richmond Virginia and surrounding areas we have copperheads.

 

Water moccasins do not come farther up the Historic James river past Hopewell and the Appomattox River.

 

Some people on Nextdoor swear they have seen timber rattlesnakes in our area but I am doubtful.

 

Having more dogs bit on face  this year than in years past as the copperheads are on the move.
