cyclops2 Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 I am surprised that a REAL fish that eats Plankton would not be welcomed as a CLEAN and Healthy meat for humans. What are the latest cooking results ? Something positive is needed. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 18, 2022 Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2022 Have you ever seen/held/been close to one? They're a disgusting fish. They're slimy, smell bad, and start mysteriously bleeding the instant they're removed from the water. I'm not a fish eater personally but no way I'd eat one. They make excellent cut bait for catfish though. 4 Quote

Eric 26 Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 There was a show on Sportsman Channel where a chef catches/hunts animals not often thought of as edible think opossum, raccoon etc. I’m pretty sure he did a show featuring Asian carp but I may be thinking of another show. If I’m not mistaken it was filmed on the Mississippi River in Illinois. 1 Quote

I'm been gut punched by a few on the river when they come shooting out of the water. They leave almost a perfect imprint where they hit your clothing due to the amount of slime that covers their body. Their extremely short digestive track is always packed full of bright green slime from them filtering the water. The low set eye and severe underbite looks like they have some sort of birth defect. Nothing about them looks like something that should be eaten. Maybe they're delicious and I think they would be an excellent option to help provide a protein source for homeless shelters if they're edible, but I have no interest in ever trying them myself. 3 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted May 18, 2022 Super User Posted May 18, 2022 My friend brought back sone frozen. Just clean fillets. It was good. A firm white fish. We did fish and chips. I respect the opinion above however with most things I try not to judge a book by it’s cover. How something looks surely shouldn’t be the governing factor with respect to flavor. Take a hotdog. Delicious to most. It’s full of mystery parts and looks like a dogs boner:). But yummy! as I understand it, there are local fish markets that sell carp fish and chips. I bet unscrupulous restaurants sell carp as other fish. And have you seen a Chilean Seabass. ? Not a handsome fish but it has great PR. I want to catch and try to eat a snakehead. Most fish is edible deep fried. 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 18, 2022 Super User Posted May 18, 2022 If you really wanna try some, find Asian ppl (Chinese to be the best) or Middle East, they might be able to cook you delicious meal out from those carp. I think I seen some menu with those type carp or even in Thailand some carp species considered as good fish to eat. Here is SoCal my friend know someone (Lebanese?) who willing to pay for common carp. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 18, 2022 Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2022 I’ve eaten Asian carp. TWRA was frying them at the 2019 bassmaster classic and giving it out for free with the recipe. They had churched it up with garlic and some other things, i would give it a 3.5 out of 10. I could it eat it, but I’d rather not. It was definitely worse than bass, panfish, walleye, and catfish. Bout like a drum I’d say (I eat a lot of fish) also, important to note: if you want to get rid of a fish, creating a meat market is not the solution . It’s the opposite. If there’s a fish people enjoy, they will want more. And if people make money off selling the fish meat, they will want more of this money 3 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted May 18, 2022 Super User Posted May 18, 2022 I saw many European people fishing for common carp when I was on vacation in Northern waters. These people love fishing for carp, many of them keep the carp they catch to eat. Maybe eating carp is an acquired taste for some, or maybe they have amazing cooking skills. If eating carp makes them happy then let them eat all the carp they want, these fish are thriving across the USA so there is plenty of fish for them to eat. 2 hours ago, Darth-Baiter said: I respect the opinion above however with most things I try not to judge a book by it’s cover. Some people see bass as trash fish, while others dedicate most of their fishing time to mostly bass fishing. I find snakeheads to be a beautiful fish that is a better gamefish than black bass. A 5-8 pound bullseye snakehead fights much harder than a 10 pound largemouth bass, and a snakehead over 10 pounds fights like a big snook going into the mangroves. 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted May 19, 2022 Author Posted May 19, 2022 Is it O K to put my thumb into their mouth to get a grip ? Quote
SWVABass Posted May 19, 2022 Posted May 19, 2022 I’ve seen them turned into a fish cake. I believe that was maybe Andrew Zimmerman. It was a pretty drawn out process though to get the fish to that point. My understanding is they have a ton of bones, so I believe they boiled it, then ground it all up bones included. Then turned it into the cakes. I would try it if I didn’t have to make it. Quote

flatcreek Posted May 19, 2022 Posted May 19, 2022 Place the carp on a cedar plank over hot coals. When you see that the carp is cooked throw it away and eat the plank. 2 2 Quote

Sure, but it's hard to grip because it's so rubbery. Mine usually have a fiberglass arrow shaft sticking out of their side for me to get a grip of though ? 1 1 Quote

Eric 26 Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 I was literally listening to a radio segment just now on WLS AM 890 and Illinois is now changing the name from Asian carp to Copie or Kopie?. The biologist talking about this said they are a firm white fillet. 1 Quote

This is the English tradition of coarse fishing, when trout and salmon belonged to the lords only, and common people had to fish for carp and tench.
