ThatFishingGuy Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Just picked up a new frogging and flipping stick, now I'm trying to figure out what to pair it up with. I was thinking an SLX (either XT or DC) since the colors would match so well. Any other suggestions? Also what line? I'm torn between 50 and 65lb braid. Thanks! Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted May 16, 2022 Super User Posted May 16, 2022 Of the 7 or 8 characteristics of a reel that I consider, color is number12. I used 65# braid on frog rod years ago, but I no longer see a need to use anything more than 50. 3 Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted May 16, 2022 Super User Posted May 16, 2022 50lb Braid. This reel is more rugged than the SLX , easy to tune externally adjustable centrifugal brakes, and with its 36mm tall spool you can throw a frog into the next zip code if you like. Great 5yr warranty too. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Quantum_Smoke_X_100_Casting_Reels/descpage-QS3C.html 1 Quote

I have 8 or 10 and I like them a lot better than the Tatulas, Lewis, Abu, and Okumas I have. You can get them from reputable vendors on eBay for well under MSRP. In fact I picked up another new S3 last week for $102 shipped. 1 Quote
scbassin Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 My Frogging Rods Are the Champion XP DC F/H 736 C paired with Shimano Bantam MGL's XG's. ( Gear Ratio: 8.2:1, Aluminum Alloy Hagane Body, Hyper-tensile brass gears, VBS Centrifugal Cast Control System, SVS Infinity Brake System, Extra Efficient X Ship Gear System, Super Free Spool Design, Click set Dartainum Drag, 7 stainless steel ARB bearings, 84 mm Handle, Reel Wt. 6.8 oz.) These make excellent frogging combos. I do plan on checking out the 22 Bantams when they come out though. Quote
MiceNReets Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 Slx MGL with 40-50lbs braid would do just fine for frogging. And it would match your rod as well. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted May 17, 2022 Super User Posted May 17, 2022 Elite P/F in 8:1 with Suffix 131 40lb is hard to beat on a 736C. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 Budget? If you're looking for something around the SLX price range ($100 x $120) why not try out one of the new Dobyn's reels. I know they make one with blue accents on it to match the new Champ XP! Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted May 17, 2022 Super User Posted May 17, 2022 I would not have a SLX on a frogging and heavy flipping rod. I'd have something much more robust. Me personally, I'd be using a Bantam. If money is an issue, I'd go with a Curado. 1 Quote
ThatFishingGuy Posted May 17, 2022 Author Posted May 17, 2022 I'd say around $200, $250 absolute max. That Daiwa Tatula Elite P/F looks really nice as well, even though it's at the higher end of my budget. Quote
Fastbee Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 The only thing I've successfully paired with a Dobyns rod is a FOR SALE sign! They are fine rods, just not for me I guess. I did have a Champ XP 736 last year for frogs and paired it with a JDM Bantam XG. It was a good combo, but I feel like the SLX would be fine. I also really like the 2020 Daiwa Tatula SV TW103. 50lb braid is the heaviest I use and have never felt like I needed more for frogs. Quote

Give me an SLX for anything and I'm smiling. Quote
YakOrBank Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 I have a Slx mgl 8.2 on a 6’8 st croix mojo bass top water rod with 50lb braid. ( treble hook from my Cranking rod scratched my cronarch mgl 150) slightest faint line down the side of the face plate. Crying inside lightly Quote

Haha...I've tried the most popular models from Sierra to Champion Extreme HP and they never stick around. Like I said, they are fine rods it's just a personal preference thing. I wouldn't hesitate to use my SLX MGL for frogs or flipping, it's a strong performer for the money. 1 Quote

While U dont agree with you on the Dobyns ? (we each have our preferences), I wholeheartedly agree with you on the SLX MGL reels. I have been very happy with the two I MGL 71s I have. I have one on my Topwater rod and one on my Jerkbait rod. Oops? Meant "I" don't agree! ? 1 Quote
