I'm not a happy camper.

I was catching fish left and right using a floating zoom trick worm this afternoon, fishing it over super thick algae and hydrilla.

None of the fish were big...prob 1-1.5lbs at the most, but I was having a blast just catching fish.

A 1/2lb fish took the worm, and as I was reeling him in, my rod just snapped between the 4th and 5th guides.  It's a fast/medium heavy rod.

Contacted Abu Garcia.  They basically just wanted a copy of the receipt and said they'd send a new rod...BUT....wanted a $9.95 warranty processing fee.

This is leaving a bad enough taste in my mouth regarding Abu Garcia that I'm considering switching brands.

I shouldn't have to pay anything for a warranty replacement on an obviously defective product.

Just venting bc I'm a huge Abu Garcia fan...but not after this.

I'm sorry your rod broke, but warranties don't "should" anything, they are spelled out in writing somewhere. As to "obviously defective" how are we getting there?

no way to prove a “defective” rod. if the rod didn’t break on the larger fish, why did it break on the small one? we’re you flipping the larger ones that caused the rod to weaken at the guides? i’d be more than happy to pay $10 for a replacement rod from anyone…

10 bucks for a replacement rod is actually a deal if you look at some other company's warranties.

I don't flip fish up to the boat, etc.  No idea why it broke.

I could see if it snapped at a guide, etc.

Don't get me wrong, they gave me zero grief about it, but the rod is like 4 months old...

Guess I'm just spoiled by abu's old policy perhaps

I busted an abu Garcia Ike drop shot rod awhile back. I paid the same fee and within a week had a new rod. No grief no nothing just showed up and was back to fishing. For me I thought of it as paying for shipping

This thread actually has me considering buying some Abu rods.  I have a worthless, broken Dobyns Champion sitting in my garage that broke in a similar circumstance.  No way to prove it's defective and Dobyns wants $100 ($70 replacement and $30 shipping) to "replace" this rod.  It's a $260 rod that was not worth anything close to $260 to begin with.  Now they want to turn their rod into a $360 rod.  From day 1 I never felt it was worth the money.  If you liked that rod you are getting a helluva deal for ten bucks.

Perhaps that IS what the fee is?

Yeah, the rod was great to be honest.  It retails for $180, and I got it from TW on sale for $140.

Yeah, $10 doesn't sound so bad compared to $80...

I have owned 2 Dobyns rods......A Sierra spinning and a Champion casting. Both rods broke. I refused to pay that for a warranty. I ended up giving them to my nephew.

I've only had one other rod break in my entire life: an old Shakespeare graphite rod from the 1980's that was so beat to death in the bottom of a bateau that I was surprised it lasted THAT long.

This one just snapped right between the 4th and 5th guides.

That maybe what the charge is for. But I wasn’t going to complain. I did buy a two year no questions asked exchange at BPS for a St Croix rod I just bought. Only have to give “a piece” back to get a new one at no charge. Wouldn’t have worked for the rod I replaced because it’s in 70 fow on the Tn river ???

$10 for a new rod. It costs more to ship it.

Also, everyone I know that has a Veritas has had one break. They love the rod but after a year or so they start to have issues.

Ironically or not, I've had all the others veritas rods 1-3 years.  This one was the "youngest".

Not to be a jerk, but it is very likely you did something to break the rod. When a rod has a manufacturing defect, it breaks when you bend the rod to test it, or with the first couple casts or first couple fish. High sticking on previous fish? Grabbing the rod anywhere above the first guide? Hit the blank with a worm weight? Yes, some rods break easier than others, but if it breaks after the first trip it is something the fisherman did. From that perspective, the warranty is amazing, and of course Abu knows that and you paid for it when you bought the rod.

They don't even ask you to ship the broken rod back either like most companies do.

Remember, yesterday's price, is not today's price..so the $9.95 is not bad compared to other places, even if it was free before.
